Betla National Park is about 170 km from Ranchi city centre and 175 km from Ranchi Junction by road, via Ratu, Kuru, Chandwa and Latehar, and a cab takes 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes. The park is closed from 1 July to 30 September and reopens on 1 October; open-jeep safaris start at 06:00 and 14:00 and cost Rs 2,450 per jeep on the official Palamau Tiger Reserve portal (2025-26 rate). Raahi Saarthi cabs from Ranchi to Betla start at Rs 3,299 one way.
Betla is the one proper jeep safari within reach of Ranchi, and most of what is written about getting there is out of date. The distance most pages give is 30 km short, the safari fee most pages quote belongs to a system that no longer exists, and since October 2025 the car you arrive in cannot go inside the Betla forest at all. This is the trip as it actually runs in the 2026-27 season: the road, when to leave, what the safari costs, where to sleep and what you are realistically going to see.
How far Betla is from Ranchi, and why the numbers disagree
The official figure is 170 km. The Palamau Tiger Reserve portal, the Jharkhand Forest Department, the Latehar district site and Jharkhand Tourism all give about 170 km via Latehar, and routing on the established road agrees: 170 km from Albert Ekka Chowk in the city centre, 175 km from Ranchi Junction. The road runs west on NH-39 through Ratu, Kuru, Chandwa and Latehar, stays on NH-39 towards Daltonganj for a while, then turns onto SH-9 through Kechki to Bison Gate, the park entrance. It does not go through Balumath or through Daltonganj town, whatever older route descriptions say. Betla to Ranchi is the same road and the same distance in reverse.
- Checkpoints from Ranchi Junction: Ratu about 18 km, Kuru 62 km, Chandwa 82 km, Latehar 110 km, Bison Gate 175 km
- Ranchi to Latehar: about 110 km, roughly 2 hours 30 minutes on NH-39
- Latehar to Bison Gate: about 65 km, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes - slower, because the last stretch is forest road
- Door to door, 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes by cab; Jharkhand Tourism says 4 hours and Latehar Tourism 5, and free-flow routing estimates under 2 hours 30 minutes are not a real drive time
| Figure | Where you will see it | What it actually measures |
|---|---|---|
| 140 km | Older travel pages | Nothing verifiable - no official source or routing engine supports it |
| 157-162 km | OpenStreetMap-based calculators such as rome2rio | A 10.5 km unnamed forest link near Satbarwa and Chhipadohar, mapped in April 2025 and not verified as a public road |
| 170 km | PTR portal, Jharkhand Forest Department, latehar.nic.in, Jharkhand Tourism | The established road from Ranchi city centre via Latehar and Kechki |
| 175 km | Latehar Tourism, Prabhat Khabar | The same road measured from Ranchi Junction |
| 197 km / 208 km | Routes forced through Daltonganj town / Balumath | Detours, not the usual road |
Routing checked on OpenStreetMap data from Albert Ekka Chowk and Ranchi Junction to Bison Gate. The forest link behind the shorter figures exists in the map data but has not been verified as a public road, so we do not count it.
When to leave Ranchi: the 06:00 safari versus a night at Betla
The morning slot is the one people want, and it is the one you cannot sensibly reach from Ranchi on the same day. At 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes, being at Bison Gate for 06:00 means leaving Ranchi around 01:30 and driving the last 65 km of forest road in the dark. The plan that works is a 07:00 departure, which reaches Betla around 11:30 to 12:00 - in time for lunch, check-in and the 14:00 afternoon slot - then a night at Betla and the 06:00 slot the next morning. Two safaris instead of one also doubles your chances with the animals you came for.
| Plan | Leave Ranchi | Reach Betla | Safari | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same-day morning safari | About 01:30 | Before 06:00 | 06:00 slot | Not worth it - over four hours of night driving, the last hour on forest road |
| Day trip | 07:00 | 11:30-12:00 | 14:00 slot | Possible, but you are back in Ranchi around 20:00-20:45 after 8.5 to 9.5 hours in the car |
| One night, two safaris | 07:00 | 11:30-12:00 | 14:00 on day one, 06:00 on day two | The plan we recommend - both slots, and back in Ranchi by early afternoon on day two if you leave after breakfast |
| Late start, morning safari only | 12:00 | 16:15-16:45 | 06:00 next day | Fine if you cannot leave early - you still get the morning slot |
Drive times are estimates for a cab on the Latehar-Kechki road. The afternoon slot opens at 14:00 and a trip lasts about 90 minutes, so a day-trip return starts around 15:30-16:00. The official booking portal lists Tuesday as the weekly off day, so do not build a plan around a Tuesday safari.
Safari rules for the 2026-27 season
Betla shuts every year from 1 July to 30 September on National Tiger Conservation Authority orders and reopens on 1 October, so the 2026-27 season opens on 1 October 2026. When we checked the official portal on 23 September 2026 it still said safaris were closed until further notification because of rain, so confirm before setting out in the first days of October. Safaris are booked online at palamautigerreserve.in: pick a date and a slot, pay ₹2,450 for the whole jeep, and carry the original photo ID you booked with. The price is per vehicle, so six adults pay the same as a couple. Pages still quoting ₹300 per person, or an elephant safari at ₹500, describe a fee system that has since been replaced twice - by a revised fee structure in October 2024, and by the open-jeep system in October 2025. The official portal offers only the jeep safari, so do not plan on an elephant ride.

Your cab stops at Bison Gate - the open-jeep rule
Since the October 2025 season only registered open safari jeeps may enter Betla National Park. Private cars, Scorpios, SUVs, MUVs and Thars are all barred, and that includes every cab. About 33 registered jeeps run the safaris through the Eco Development Committee, and in September 2026 park management stopped new registrations and ordered the existing jeeps to renew theirs. Thirty-odd jeeps and two slots a day is a hard ceiling, and by the reserve management's own figures footfall roughly doubled, to around 80,000 visitors, in the first open-jeep season - so on weekends book online a few days ahead rather than hoping for a seat at the gate.
- Your Raahi Saarthi cab drops you at Bison Gate and waits there while you take the jeep; parking is inside our all-inclusive fare
- Online cancellation was switched off on the portal when we checked, so book only the dates you are sure of
- The jeeps are open - carry water, a hat for the afternoon slot and binoculars if you have them
Will you see a tiger at Betla? Almost certainly not
Palamau was one of the first nine tiger reserves created under Project Tiger in 1973 and is Jharkhand's only tiger reserve: 1,129.93 sq km, of which Betla National Park is 226.32 sq km. It currently has no resident tigress. The last known one, aged 16, was found dead in February 2020, and since 2022-23 about seven male tigers have been recorded passing through, mostly dispersing from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In July 2026 the central government approved a plan to bring in two tigresses and one tiger from Bandhavgarh, Tadoba or Kanha, held first in a soft-release enclosure, with release targeted for the end of 2026 - but that timeline has slipped before, and a plan is not a population. Go to Betla for the forest and the elephants, and treat a tiger as a lottery ticket.
- What you realistically see: elephants, gaur (Indian bison), chital, sambar, barking deer, langur, wild boar and peafowl
- Leopards are seen occasionally; nobody publishes sighting rates, so any percentage you are quoted is a guess
- A tiger coded T07 was confirmed from pugmarks in September 2026 but had not yet been caught on a camera trap
- Kamaldah, a lake inside the park from Raja Medini Ray's time, is where elephant herds often bathe and migratory birds arrive in winter
- November to March is the most comfortable time; April to June is hot, but animals gather at water and are easier to find
Distances to Betla from Netarhat, Patratu, Daltonganj and elsewhere
Betla sits at the end of Jharkhand's long western arm, so it pairs naturally with Netarhat and Lodh Falls and far less naturally with anything east of Ranchi. Netarhat is about 95 km away on forest roads through the reserve via Chhipadohar, Garu and Rud - not via Mahuadanr, which is on the Lodh Falls road. Lodh Falls, at 143 m the highest waterfall in Jharkhand, is also about 95 km from Betla but only about 60 km from Netarhat, which is why it belongs on the Netarhat day rather than the Betla one.

Where to stay at Betla, with official prices
Stay at Betla itself if you want the morning safari - the New Tourist Complex is about 500 m from the park. The Palamau Tiger Reserve runs its own stays and sells them on the same portal as the safaris, and at Betla they cost ₹1,700 to ₹3,000 a night. Kechki Eco Retreat, on the river confluence 7 to 9 km away, is the most scenic option but adds a short drive before a 06:00 slot. Private hotels around Betla and in Daltonganj, 24 km away, take the overflow. Prabhat Khabar reported on 20 September 2026 that advance bookings for the new season had opened, though the portal's own guest-house booking still showed as unavailable on 23 September.
| Stay | Where | Per night |
|---|---|---|
| New Tourist Complex, standard AC | About 500 m from the park | ₹1,700 (2 guests) |
| New Tourist Complex, premium | About 500 m from the park | ₹2,500 (3 guests) |
| New Tree House | Core area | ₹2,500 (2 guests) |
| New Cottage | Betla | ₹3,000 (2 guests) |
| Mud House / Tree House | About 4 km from Bison Gate | ₹2,000 (2 guests) |
| Kechki Eco Retreat, beach cottage | Kechki confluence, 7-9 km | ₹3,000 |

Palamau Tiger Reserve rates on palamautigerreserve.in, read 23 September 2026; they may change for the new season. Check-in 12:00, check-out 11:00. JTDC's Van Vihar at Betla also takes guests, but we could not verify a current tariff.
Palamu Fort, Kechki, and what stays open in the monsoon
Two places near Betla are worth the time on any visit, and both stay open when the park itself is shut. The Palamu Forts are two ruins about 3 km from the park - about 5 km by road from Bison Gate - overlooking the Auranga river. The newer hill fort is credited to the Chero king Raja Medini Ray, who ruled from 1658 to 1674, and the district attributes the older fort on the plain to the earlier Raksel dynasty, so the '16th-century' date repeated on many pages does not match the district's own account. Kechki, 7 to 9 km from Betla, is the sangam of the North Koel and Auranga rivers and the place where Satyajit Ray shot Aranyer Din Ratri in 1970.
- Palamu Fort from July 2026: two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws are barred from the forest road and cars pay a ₹50 token at the check post - so far a single press report, and locals have asked for a rethink, so it may change
- During the 1 July - 30 September closure only the national park and its safaris shut; Betla's rest houses and canteen stay open
- Open in the monsoon months: Kechki, Palamu Fort, Mandal Dam, Tatha falls, Mirchaiya Fall, Koel View, Suga Bandh and Lodh Falls
Getting to Betla without a car, and what the cab costs
Barwadih Junction, 13 km from Bison Gate, is the practical railhead, and Daltonganj (Medininagar), 24 km away, is the other. From Ranchi the Ranchi-Sasaram Intercity (18635) leaves in the late afternoon - 17:00 in the 2025-26 timetable - and reaches Barwadih a little over three hours later, which puts you at Betla after dark and needing a room anyway; the return 18636 leaves Barwadih around 06:50 and reaches Ranchi late in the morning. Times and running days change, so check NTES before relying on them. The nearest bus stand is Daltonganj, about 45 minutes from Betla, and we could not verify a current Ranchi-Daltonganj bus timetable. The nearest airports are Birsa Munda in Ranchi, 178 km by road, and Gaya, about 190 km. By cab, these are Raahi Saarthi's fixed fares from Ranchi:
- Ranchi to Betla one way: from ₹3,299 (hatchback), ₹3,699 (sedan), ₹4,499 (Ertiga), ₹5,299 (Innova Crysta), ₹8,499 (Tempo Traveller)
- Ranchi to Betla round trip: from ₹5,999 (hatchback), ₹6,499 (sedan), ₹7,999 (Ertiga), ₹9,299 (Innova Crysta), ₹13,999 (Tempo Traveller)
- Betla + Netarhat, 3 days / 2 nights: ₹12,999 sedan (4 passengers), ₹15,999 Ertiga (6), ₹18,999 Innova Crysta (7), ₹29,999 Tempo Traveller (12) - Betla safaris, Palamu Fort, Netarhat's sunset and sunrise points and Lodh Falls
- Cab fares include fuel, tolls, parking, driver allowance and 5% GST; the safari jeep (₹2,450 per jeep online), rooms, meals and camera charges are paid separately

What is the Betla to Ranchi distance by road?
Betla to Ranchi is the same road in reverse: about 170 km to Ranchi city centre and 175 km to Ranchi Junction, through Kechki, Latehar, Chandwa and Kuru, taking 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes by car. Leaving Betla after the 06:00 safari and breakfast puts you back in Ranchi by early afternoon.
Can I do Ranchi to Betla National Park and back in one day?
Yes, but only with the afternoon safari: leave Ranchi at 07:00, reach Betla around 11:30-12:00, take the 14:00 slot, and you are back in Ranchi around 20:00-20:45 after 8.5 to 9.5 hours of driving. The 06:00 morning slot would need a 01:30 departure from Ranchi, so for a morning safari stay one night at Betla.
Betla National Park kab khulega 2026?
Betla National Park reopens on 1 October 2026 after its annual monsoon closure from 1 July to 30 September, ordered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority. On 23 September 2026 the official portal still showed safaris closed until further notification because of rain, so check palamautigerreserve.in before travelling in early October.
How much is the Betla National Park safari and how do I book it?
A Betla jeep safari costs ₹2,450 per jeep (2025-26 rate) for up to 6 adults and 2 children, booked online at palamautigerreserve.in for the 06:00 or 14:00 slot. Carry the original photo ID used in the booking; the official portal lists Tuesday as the weekly off day and offers no elephant safari.
Can I take my own car inside Betla National Park?
No. Since October 2025 only registered open safari jeeps may enter Betla National Park - private cars, SUVs and Thars are not allowed. A Raahi Saarthi cab drops you at Bison Gate and waits there while you take the jeep safari.
Is there a tiger in Betla National Park?
Tigers pass through Palamau Tiger Reserve, but a sighting at Betla is very unlikely: the reserve has had no resident tigress since 2020, and about seven transient males have been recorded since 2022-23. What visitors realistically see is elephants, gaur, chital, sambar, langur and peafowl, with an occasional leopard; a plan to bring in two tigresses and a tiger was approved in July 2026.
What is the Netarhat to Betla distance?
Netarhat to Betla National Park is about 95 km via Rud, Garu and Chhipadohar on forest roads through the tiger reserve, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours by car. Raahi Saarthi's Betla + Netarhat 3-day package from Ranchi starts at ₹12,999 for a sedan.
What is the Betla to Patratu distance?
Betla National Park is about 166 km from Patratu town and about 175 km from Patratu Dam by road, via Kechki, Latehar, Chandwa, McCluskieganj and Khalari - roughly 4 hours 30 minutes by car. That is shorter than going back through Ranchi, which is 170 km to Ranchi plus 40 km on to Patratu Valley.
