Netarhat from Ranchi - 156 km, 4 hr - 5 hr by cab
Jharkhand's only true hill station
Netarhat is 156 km from Ranchi, about 4 hr - 5 hr by cab. Jharkhand's only true hill station. Raahi Saarthi cab fares start at ₹6,499 (2D/1N package). The best time to visit is Oct - Mar.
Perched at about 1,100 m (roughly 3,700 feet) on the Chotanagpur plateau, 156 km west of Ranchi, Netarhat is Jharkhand's only true hill station - once the summer retreat of the British Governor and now a quiet escape of pine forests, sunrise points and the famous Magnolia Sunset. Two days, one night is the sweet spot: you need the night to see both the sunset and the sunrise.
How to reach Netarhat from Ranchi
By cab from Ranchi (156 km, 4-5 hours): NH-43 to Bero, NH-143AG to Lohardaga (about 75 km out), NH-143A to Ghaghra (about 98 km), then SH-9 through Bishunpur (about 122 km) and up the Banari ghat. The forest starts at Bishunpur, 32-33 km short of Netarhat, and the steep climb is roughly the last 15-20 km - allow about an hour from Bishunpur. The road does not pass Mahuadanr, which lies 42 km beyond Netarhat on the way to Lodh Falls. There is no railway station: Latehar is about 78 km by road and Lohardaga about 84 km, so Ranchi (154 km) is the practical railhead. The one direct bus, Pathak Travels, leaves Ranchi at 13:40 and arrives around 18:45 for about ₹250.

FAQs about Netarhat
How far is Netarhat from Ranchi?
Netarhat is 156 km from Ranchi by road (154 km from Ranchi Junction and Hatia), 4-5 hours by cab via Bero, Lohardaga, Ghaghra and Bishunpur on NH-43, NH-143AG, NH-143A and SH-9. The forest begins at Bishunpur, 32-33 km short of Netarhat, and the steep Banari ghat is roughly the last 15-20 km. The road does not go through Mahuadanr, which is 42 km beyond Netarhat.
Which is the nearest railway station to Netarhat?
Netarhat has no railway station. The nearest by road is Latehar (LTHR), about 78 km away, followed by Lohardaga (LAD) at about 84 km; the '33 km' figure seen online is the straight-line distance. In practice most travellers take the train to Ranchi Junction, 154 km from Netarhat, and drive from there - or take a Ranchi-Lohardaga MEMU (about 1.5 hours) and a local taxi for the last 84 km.
Is there a bus from Ranchi to Netarhat?
Yes, one direct bus: Pathak Travels leaves Ranchi daily at 13:40 and reaches Netarhat at about 18:45, for about ₹250 in a non-AC seater, and returns from Netarhat at 05:40. Because it arrives after sunset in every month and leaves before sunrise from about September to April, a bus traveller on a one-night trip misses both the Magnolia sunset and the sunrise - you need two nights, or a cab.
What is the Netarhat trip budget for 2 days?
About ₹11,400-15,500 for two people by sedan: Raahi Saarthi's 2-day, 1-night Netarhat package at ₹6,499 for a sedan (fuel, tolls, parking and driver allowance included), one government-run room at ₹2,500-5,000 a night and roughly ₹600-1,000 per person per day for food (our estimate). The Ertiga package is ₹8,499 and the Innova Crysta ₹9,999; hotel and meals are always extra.
What is the hotel room price in Netarhat?
Government-run rooms in Netarhat cost ₹2,500-5,000 a night: JTDC Hotel Prabhat Vihar Deluxe ₹2,500-5,000 (24 rooms, beside Sunrise Point), JTDC Hotel Paryatan Vihar ₹2,500-3,000 (32 rooms, Lake Road), and the forest department's Netarhat New Cottage ₹2,500 including taxes, booked at palamautigerreserve.in. JTDC hotels are booked by phone. We could not verify private homestay rates.
Is one day enough for Netarhat?
No. A Netarhat day trip from Ranchi means over 300 km and 8-10 hours of driving, you cannot see both the Magnolia Point sunset and the sunrise without staying the night, and drivers avoid the forested ghat road after dark. Stay one night, or pick a closer day trip such as Patratu Valley or Hundru Falls.
What's the temperature at Netarhat in winter?
Netarhat's winter nights (December-January) are typically 6-10°C and fall to 3-5°C in a cold wave, while days are about 19-23°C - pack a heavy jacket for Sunrise Point. Summer is not cool, though: April and May afternoons reach about 33-35°C, not the 22-28°C often quoted, even if the nights stay pleasant.
Is Netarhat the coldest place in Jharkhand?
On average, yes: at about 1,100 m Netarhat runs roughly 3°C cooler than Ranchi. But it rarely records the coldest single night - the lowest official minimum of winter 2025-26 was 0.8°C at Gumla on 15 January 2026 (IMD Ranchi), and unofficial thermometers at McCluskieganj showed -0.5°C to -1.5°C on 8 January 2026. Our coldest places in Jharkhand guide (/guides/coldest-places-in-jharkhand) has the full readings.
Is Lodh Falls included in the Netarhat trip?
Yes. Lodh Falls - about 143 m (468 ft), the highest waterfall in Jharkhand - is 60 km from Netarhat via Mahuadanr, 1.5-2 hours each way. Raahi Saarthi's 2-day package stops there on the second morning and then returns to Ranchi by the lower road via Mahuadanr and Bishunpur (197 km), so the two days come to about 430 km with Lodh Falls, against about 340 km without it.
