Patratu is two stops on one road. The valley viewpoint sits at the top of the Patratu Ghati hairpins, about 31 km from Ranchi Junction (28 km from Albert Ekka Chowk); the road then drops about 7 km through the switchbacks to Patratu Dam, where the reservoir, the boating ghat and JTDC's Patratu Lake Resort are, 38-40 km from Ranchi. The ghat has about a dozen hairpin switchbacks (11 by our count of the OpenStreetMap road, 9 of them stacked below the viewpoint) and more than two dozen sharp bends in all, and the view down over the reservoir at sunset is the most popular evening out from Ranchi.

FAQs about Patratu Valley & Dam
How far is Patratu Valley from Ranchi?
The Patratu Valley viewpoint, at the top of the hairpins, is about 31 km from Ranchi Junction and 28 km from Albert Ekka Chowk. Patratu Dam and the Lake Resort, where the boats are, are about 7 km further down - 38-40 km from Ranchi. By cab via Kanke and Pithoria that is about 1 hour to the viewpoint and 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 min to the dam.
What is the distance from Patratu Valley to Patratu Dam?
The Patratu Valley viewpoint is about 7 km by road from Patratu Dam and the Patratu Lake Resort boating point - JTDC's own listing says 7.3 km - roughly 15-20 minutes down the main stack of nine hairpins. The dam wall itself is about 9 km from the viewpoint but is not on a public road.
How many hairpin bends are there in Patratu Ghati?
About a dozen. Our count of the OpenStreetMap road finds 11 hairpin switchbacks between Pithoria and the Patratu reservoir - 9 stacked below the valley viewpoint and 2 on the first descent after Pithoria - and more than two dozen sharp bends in all. No published source supports the widely repeated '27 hairpin bends'.
What is Pithoria Ghati or Jalebi Ghati?
Pithoria Ghati, Patratu Ghati and the nickname Jalebi Ghati all refer to the same winding road: State Highway 2 from Ranchi through Kanke and Pithoria down to Patratu. It has a short descent just after Pithoria Chowk and the main stack of hairpins below the Patratu Valley viewpoint, 11 km further on. It is not NH-33; that old number belonged to the Ranchi-Hazaribagh and Ranchi-Tata highways.
What is the Patratu Dam boating price?
Patratu Dam has no fixed published boating price in 2026, and boating itself has been limited. The Ramgarh administration halted all boats on 4 May 2026 until operators filed safety affidavits, and as of 19 July 2026 the tourism department's boat club was locked, with only the local boatmen's association running limited rowing and motor-boat trips at fares set per boat at the ghat. Entry to Patratu Lake Resort was ₹20, with parking at ₹20 for a bike and ₹50 for a car (December 2024).
What is the best time to visit Patratu Valley?
October to March: clear views down the valley, cool winter evenings, and migratory birds on the Patratu reservoir from November to March. Sunset at the viewpoint is about 17:05 in November and December and 17:20 in January, so arrive by 4:30 PM. July to September is when the valley is greenest, but it is also the wettest stretch - Ranchi averages about 16 rainy days in each of July and August.
Is Patratu Valley safe to drive at night?
It is better done in daylight. The Patratu Ghati hairpins carry heavy lorry traffic - a speeding truck killed two people at Pithoria Ghati in August 2026 - and lorries parked near bends create blind spots. Raahi Saarthi plans the descent before dark, or an overnight stay at one of JTDC's two properties by the dam.
