FAQs about Betla National Park
How far is Betla National Park from Ranchi?
Betla National Park is about 170 km from central Ranchi by road and 175 km from Ranchi Junction, 4 hr 15 min to 4 hr 45 min by cab via Ratu, Kuru, Chandwa and Latehar on NH-39, then the Kechki road to Bison Gate. That is the distance the Palamau Tiger Reserve, the Jharkhand forest department and the Latehar district administration all publish; the 140 km sometimes quoted is too low.
When is Betla National Park closed?
Betla National Park closes every year from 1 July to 30 September for the monsoon breeding season, on National Tiger Conservation Authority orders, and reopens on 1 October - the 2026-27 season opens on 1 October 2026. The official booking portal also lists Tuesday as the weekly off day. The forest rest houses, Kechki, the Palamu Forts and Lodh Falls stay open during the closure.
What are the Betla safari timings and fees?
Betla runs two open-jeep safari slots a day, a morning slot from about 06:00 and an afternoon slot from about 14:00, each trip lasting about 90 minutes. Jeeps are booked online at palamautigerreserve.in for ₹2,450 per jeep, which seats up to 6 adults and 2 children (2025-26 rate); carry the original photo ID used in the booking. Fees are revised season to season, so confirm on the portal.
Can I take my own car into Betla National Park?
No. Since the October 2025 season only registered open safari jeeps may enter Betla National Park; private cars, SUVs and Thars are not allowed inside. A Raahi Saarthi cab drops you at Bison Gate, the main entrance, and waits there while you are on the safari.
Will I see a tiger at Betla National Park?
Very unlikely. Palamau Tiger Reserve has had no resident tigress since 2020, and only a handful of transient males have been recorded passing through since 2022-23; bringing in two tigresses and a tiger, approved in July 2026, is still a plan with release targeted for the end of 2026. What a Betla safari realistically shows is elephants, gaur, chital, sambar, langur and peafowl, with the occasional leopard.
Can Betla be done as a day trip from Ranchi?
Not comfortably. Betla is 170 km and at least 4 hr 15 min each way from Ranchi, so making the 06:00 safari the same day would mean leaving around 01:30. Raahi Saarthi plans it as two days with a night near the gate: the afternoon safari on arrival, the morning safari next day, then the drive home.
Where to stay at Betla National Park?
Palamau Tiger Reserve's own stays at Betla - the tourist complex about 500 m from the park, tree houses and cottages - cost ₹1,700 to ₹3,000 a night for two (September 2026 rates), booked on palamautigerreserve.in. Kechki Eco Retreat at the river confluence, 7-9 km away, has cottages and tents at ₹2,500-3,000.
What is the nearest railway station to Betla National Park?
Barwadih Junction is the nearest, about 13 km from Betla's Bison Gate by road, with Daltonganj (Medininagar) about 24 km. From Ranchi the Ranchi-Sasaram Intercity reaches Barwadih in about 3 to 3.5 hours; check NTES for current running days and times.
