Hundru Falls has about 745 steps from the top to the base of its 320 ft (98 m) drop on the Subarnarekha river; published counts range from 650 to 800 and no official count exists. It is 45 km (about 28 miles) from central Ranchi and 44 km from Ranchi Junction, roughly 1 hr 30 min by cab, and Jharkhand Tourism lists visiting hours of 08:00 to 17:00. On 23 September 2026 the Ranchi district administration issued a safety advisory for Hundru and nearby falls after Getalsud Dam released water; no closure was reported.
Hundru Falls is the day trip from Ranchi that people search for most, and the three questions they ask - how many steps, how far, and whether it is open - get a different answer on almost every page. The step count ranges from 650 to 800, the distance from 39 to 45 km, and the route advice often mixes up the two roads. This guide gives the best-supported figure for each, says where it comes from, and flags the ones nobody has published officially.
Hundru Falls at a glance
Hundru is where the Subarnarekha river drops off the eastern edge of the Ranchi plateau, in Angara block of Ranchi district. It is Ranchi's highest waterfall and is usually ranked second in Jharkhand after Lodh Falls in Latehar - it is not the tallest in the state, whatever some pages say. You can see it from two places: the top, where the river goes over the edge, and the pool at the bottom of the steps. Locally it is also called Hundru Ghagh, ghagh being the local word for a waterfall.

How many steps are there at Hundru Falls, and why the numbers differ
The best-supported figure is about 745 steps from the top to the base. ETV Bharat reported exactly 745 in July 2025, and a visitor gave the same count independently in 2017. Every other number in circulation traces to a weaker source: 650 appeared in a 2022 newspaper piece, 'about 700' comes from visitor reviews, 740 from a 2021 blog that many Hindi sites copied, 750 from travel sites, and 'about 800' from a 2022 news report. Jharkhand Tourism, JTDC and the Ranchi district site give no count at all. So 740 and 750 are best read as rounded versions of 745. In Hindi: लगभग 745 सीढ़ियाँ. The stairway winds, and it is the climb back up, not the way down, that takes the effort.
| Stage | What is there | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Car park and entry | Entry counter, parking, food stalls at the top | 10 min |
| Top viewpoint | The river going over the edge; the spots called Saheb Chikiya and Hundru Baba above the fall are known danger points | 15-20 min |
| Descent, about 745 steps | A winding stone stairway down the gorge side | About 20 min |
| Base pool | The full 320 ft drop from below; Jogiya Dah and Bhandar Dah here are known danger spots | 30-45 min |
| Climb back up | Same stairway, uphill | 30-40 min |
| Total on site | Top and base both | 2 to 2.5 hours |
Times are for an unhurried, reasonably fit adult; there is no official figure. A 2018 visitor report puts the climb at about 30 minutes. In July 2025 the lowest 50 steps were closed during high flow, so the base can be partly off-limits in monsoon.

Distances are OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap to the road-end at the falls, rounded to the kilometre; 45 km from central Ranchi is the official Jharkhand Tourism and Ranchi district figure. Drive times are estimates for a cab in normal traffic, except the 1 hr 30 min from Ranchi, which is Jharkhand Tourism's.
How to reach Hundru Falls from Ranchi: two roads, neither a shortcut
There are two standard roads from Ranchi and they are within a kilometre or two of each other. The first takes NH-20, the Ranchi-Hazaribagh road, to Ormanjhi, then turns east through Sikidiri on MDR-105; the falls are 7-8 km past Sikidiri. The second takes the Ranchi-Purulia road through Namkum to Angara, then MDR-023 past Getalsud Dam, 21 km from Angara to the falls. Some pages say the Ormanjhi road is 6 km shorter; routing data does not support that. Pick on where you are starting: north and west Ranchi suit Ormanjhi, Namkum and the south-east suit Angara, and the Angara road lets you see Getalsud on the way.
- By cab: the practical option. Raahi Saarthi's Hundru Falls round trip from Ranchi starts at ₹1,999
- By train: Ranchi Junction (44 km) is the realistic railhead. Jonha (about 19 km), Gautamdhara (about 23 km) and Gola Road (about 15 km) are closer, but few trains stop there and a taxi at the halt is not guaranteed
- By bus: Jharkhand Tourism lists the Ranchi bus stand, 42 km away, as the nearest. We found no scheduled bus or verified shared-auto service to the falls themselves
- By air: Birsa Munda Airport is 49 km away, about 1 hr 30 min by road
Is Hundru Falls open now? Status as of 23 September 2026
Hundru is running in spate. Getalsud Dam, about 14 km upstream by road, opened four radial gates on 1-2 September 2026 with its water level at 1934 ft against a maximum of 1936 ft, and tourist guards told visitors to keep away from the river. On 23 September 2026 the Ranchi district administration issued a safety advisory covering Hundru, Jonha, Dassam, Sita and Remix falls. No formal closure was reported. Hundru's flow depends on what Getalsud releases as well as on rain, which is why it can swell suddenly on a dry day. There is precedent for partial closures: in July 2025 the lowest 50 steps were shut because the flow was too strong, and a similar advisory was issued on 24 August 2025.
- Stay away from marked risk zones and follow police and administration orders
- Check conditions and the weather before you set out
- No boating in heavy rain, and no visiting while intoxicated
- Follow the tourist guards' instructions on site
- A ropeway at Hundru was proposed in Jharkhand's 2026-27 budget (February 2026); it is a proposal, not something you can ride
Safety: stay out of the water
No formal bathing ban at Hundru was found, and Jharkhand Tourism's own description still mentions a dip in the pool. The record says otherwise. A youth from Rajgir, Bihar, drowned on 2 October 2023 while bathing above the falls after tourist guards told him not to. An 18-year-old student from West Medinipur drowned in October 2024 after slipping while bathing in the river above the falls, on a coaching-centre trip of 78 students. On 5 April 2026 three students taking selfies nearly drowned at Jogiya Dah and were pulled out by tourist guards, one after about an hour of CPR. Local reporting names four danger spots - Saheb Chikiya and the Hundru Baba spot above the fall, Jogiya Dah and Bhandar Dah below it - where water that looks shallow is deep. In July 2025, 15 tourist guards were handling safety for the whole site.
- Do not bathe above the falls or at the base pool, however calm it looks
- Keep off wet rock at the edge for photographs
- If a guard waves you back, go back - they know where people have drowned
When to go, month by month
Jharkhand Tourism gives August to March as the best season. Within that, the trade-off is between water and safety: the biggest falls come in August and September, exactly when advisories and step closures happen. October and November keep a strong flow with settled weather, which makes them the easiest months for a first visit. Go early in the day in any season: the site opens at 08:00, and starting down the steps by about 15:00 leaves time to be back up before closing - that is practical advice, not an official rule.
| Months | What to expect | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| July | Monsoon building; in July 2025 the lowest 50 steps were closed for high flow | Go only after checking conditions; the base may be shut |
| August - September | Peak flow; Getalsud releases; advisories in Aug 2025 and Sep 2026 | Spectacular from the top; treat the base as a maybe |
| October - November | Strong flow, settled weather; both drownings above were in October | Best balance for a first visit; stay out of the water |
| December - February | Cool weather for the climb; smaller fall; New Year picnic crowds | Weekdays for fewer people |
| March | End of the official season | Go early before the heat |
| April - June | Outside the official season; far less water than in the monsoon, and hot on the steps | Only if you are passing; start at 08:00 |
Flow varies year to year with rainfall and Getalsud Dam releases.
Combining Hundru with Jonha, Sita and Dassam falls
Hundru, Jonha, Sita and Dassam are all on the edge of the Ranchi plateau, but they are not next to each other. Jonha and Sita are both about 24 km from Hundru by road, and the road to Sita passes Jonha first - Sita sits beside Jonha, not beside Hundru. Dassam is 68 km from Hundru. A Ranchi-Hundru-Jonha-Dassam-Ranchi loop is about 157 km, or 165 km with Sita, and takes about 10 hours door to door. Do Hundru first, while the steps are cool and empty: it has the hardest climb of the four.

| Leg | Road distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Ranchi Junction to Hundru Falls | 44 km | 1 hr 15 min - 1 hr 30 min |
| Hundru Falls to Jonha Falls | 24 km | 40-45 min |
| Hundru Falls to Sita Falls (via Jonha) | 24 km | 40-45 min |
| Jonha Falls to Sita Falls | 7 km | About 15-20 min |
| Jonha Falls to Dassam Falls | 53 km | About 1 hr 30 min |
| Dassam Falls to Ranchi Junction | 37 km | About 1 hr |
| Hundru Falls to Dassam Falls, direct | 68 km | 1 hr 45 min - 2 hr |
| Hundru Falls to Patratu Valley | 60 km | About 2 hr |
| Full loop: Hundru, Jonha, Dassam | 157 km (165 km with Sita) | About 10 hours door to door |
OSRM road distances, rounded; drive times are estimates. Jonha has its own long stairway (722 steps by one count, 772 by another), so two big climbs in a day is the real effort, not the driving.
What to carry, and what the day costs
Hundru is a simple day out, but the stairway punishes bad footwear and an empty water bottle. Toilets exist at the top, though in July 2025 they were reported to have no water supply, and 273 food and souvenir stalls were counted there in July 2025. Budget about ₹10 per person for entry and about ₹30 for car parking on 2026 visitor reports, plus the cab. If knees or age make 745 steps a bad idea, the top viewpoint alone is a proper visit - you see the river go over the edge and the gorge below.
- Shoes with grip - the stone steps are slippery when wet
- At least a litre of water per person for the climb back
- Cash for entry, parking and stalls
- A rain jacket from July to September, and a bag that keeps both hands free on the steps
