Ranchi to Shikharji (Parasnath Hill) - distance by both roads, the 27 km vandana, doli rates and the nearest airport

Shikharji is about 160 km from Ranchi by road through Ormanjhi, Gola and Dumri, or about 183 km through Hazaribagh and Bagodar, and either road takes 4 to 4.5 hours to Madhuban, the pilgrim village at the foot of Parasnath Hill where the drive ends. From Madhuban the full Shikharji vandana is a 27 km walk - about 9 km up, 9 km along the tonks and 9 km down - that takes 8 to 12 hours, so pilgrims set out between 2 and 4 AM. Raahi Saarthi's one-way cab from Ranchi to Madhuban starts at ₹3,799.

Shikharji is an easy trip to plan wrong, because almost every number published about it disagrees with the next one. Search results put it anywhere from 169 to 209 km from Ranchi, call the trek 18 km, list an airport 103 km away and promise a sunrise from the summit, and none of that holds up on the actual road or the actual hill. This guide gives the road distance from every city pilgrims set out from, what the vandana really involves, what a doli costs, and the points on which the sources genuinely differ.

Parasnath, Shikharji and Madhuban: one hill, one base village

Parasnath and Shikharji are not two places. Parasnath is the name of the hill, after Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara; Sammed Shikhar, or Shikharji, is the Jain name for the same summit, where 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras are believed to have attained moksha. At 1,365 m by most measures - the Giridih district administration gives 1,350 m - it is the highest mountain in Jharkhand. No road goes to the top. Every car stops at Madhuban, a village of about 3,000 people (2011 census) in the Pirtand block of Giridih district, at the northern foot of the hill and about 390 to 400 m above sea level. Everything above Madhuban is on foot. So the question 'how far is Parasnath from Shikharji' has two honest answers: Parasnath railway station is about 23 km from Madhuban by road, and from Madhuban it is about 9 km on foot to the first tonk on the summit ridge.

  • Parasnath station (PNME, at Isri) to Madhuban: about 23 km by road via Dumri, 30 to 40 minutes by taxi - the 10 to 11 km often quoted is the straight line, not the road
  • Madhuban to the first tonk: about 9 km on foot, climbing roughly 950 m
  • Route planners that show a driving distance to the summit are routing to a point no car can reach
  • Madhuban has the dharamshalas, the Bhomiyaji temple where the footpath begins, and the doli bearers

Ranchi to Shikharji: two roads, and neither goes through Giridih

The distance from Ranchi depends on which road the driver takes, which is why published figures run from 169 to 190 km, and up to 209 km on sites still using the old Ranchi-Hazaribagh highway length. The short road leaves Ranchi on four-lane NH-20 as far as Ormanjhi, then runs two-lane through Gola, Peterwar, Jaina More, Bermo, Nawadih and Dumri, where it turns north onto NH-114A, the Dumri-Giridih road, for 17 km to Madhuban More and 3.7 km in to the village. That is about 160 km. The other road stays on NH-20 through Ramgarh to Hazaribagh, takes NH-522 to Bagodar and the GT Road east to Dumri, then makes the same turn. It is about 183 km: four-lane to Hazaribagh, two-lane to Bagodar, then the GT Road. Both take 4 to 4.5 hours. Giridih town is on neither road - it is about 30 km beyond the Madhuban turn - and neither is Isri Bazaar, which sits 3 km east of Dumri on the GT Road.

  • Shikharji to Ranchi is the same distance in reverse: about 160 km, or about 183 km via Hazaribagh
  • Dumri is the last proper town before the Madhuban turn-off, not Isri
  • The short road is the same corridor as the 252 km short road to Deoghar, which passes Madhuban More - so Shikharji and Baba Baidyanath combine naturally
  • Reach Madhuban before dark: the climb starts at 2 to 4 AM, and a late arrival costs you the night's sleep

Distance to Shikharji from Dhanbad, Bokaro, Jamshedpur and other cities

Pilgrims from the east - Dhanbad, Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Kolkata - come west along the GT Road through Topchanchi and Isri and turn north at Dumri, so for them Parasnath station really is on the way. Pilgrims from Deoghar come the other way, through Giridih town. The figures below are road distances to Madhuban. The Giridih district website's 'how to reach' box gives 54 km from Bokaro and 38 km from Hazaribagh; neither is a road distance, and the straight line from Hazaribagh alone is about 80 km.

  • Netarhat and Shikharji are not a same-day pair - break the journey with a night in Ranchi
  • Deoghar is under 100 km away, which makes Shikharji the natural pairing with Baba Baidyanath
  • Hundru Falls to Madhuban is about 121 km via Gola, without going back through Ranchi

The vandana: 27 km, 8 to 12 hours, and it starts in the dark

The Shikharji vandana is not the 9 km climb, and it is not 18 km. It is about 27 km: roughly 9 km up from Madhuban past Gandharva Nala and Sita Nala to the first tonk, about 9 km along the tonks on the summit ridge, and about 9 km back down. Jain organisations, news reports and Wikipedia all give that figure. The 18 km you will see elsewhere counts the climb and the descent and leaves out the ridge circuit, which is the point of the pilgrimage. GPS tracks come out a little longer, at about 27.7 km with roughly 1,260 m of total climbing, because the ridge path rises and falls between tonks. Most walkers take 8 to 12 hours; elderly pilgrims and families can take up to 16, and even the doli bearers, the fastest people on the hill, take at least eight. The summit sunrise that itineraries promise does not survive the arithmetic: sunrise at Parasnath is around 05:00 in June and 06:30 in January, and a pilgrim who leaves Madhuban at 03:00 or 04:00 reaches the first tonk around 08:00 or 09:00. Being on the ridge at sunrise would mean leaving around midnight.

  • There are no meals on the hill; tea and water sellers work along the path, and many Jain pilgrims eat nothing until they are back down
  • The only overnight stay on the hill is the Dak Bungalow, and it has to be reserved in advance
  • Footwear is optional - many Jain pilgrims walk barefoot as a religious practice
  • Carry a torch and a warm layer: the first hours are in the dark, and the summit is cold from November to February

Tonks: why sources say 20, 25 or 31

A tonk is a small footprint shrine on the summit ridge. How many there are depends on who is counting, and each count is correct on its own terms. What none of them supports is the line repeated on many travel pages about passing '24 shrines' on the way up: the tonks are along the ridge, not spaced out along the 9 km climb, and no source counts exactly 24.

  • The Parshvanath tonk, also called Swarnabhadra Koot, is the highest and is traditionally the last stop of the ridge circuit
  • On Moksh Saptami the nirvana laddoo is offered at the Parshvanath tonk
  • The Parshvanath tonk has 95 steps, and the doli rate card charges extra to carry a pilgrim up to it and four other high tonks
  • Jal Mandir is the large temple on the ridge

Doli rates at Shikharji (June 2025 rate card)

Dolis are hired in Madhuban at published rates. The card below was published in June 2025 by Uttar Pradesh Prakash Bhawan, one of the Madhuban dharamshala trusts, and Scroll reported the same figures independently that month; the bearers told Scroll the rates had not changed since 2019. It is a trust's published sheet rather than a government notification, so confirm the rate when you book - ideally the evening before, since the bearers set out at around 2 AM. Weight decides the doli: a pilgrim over 69 kg has to take a chair doli, carried by four bearers.

Nearest airport to Parasnath, and the railway station

Deoghar is the nearest airport with scheduled flights, about 99 km from Madhuban, but IndiGo is its only airline. Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport is about 165 km away and has a much wider choice of flights, so it is often the more practical landing despite the extra distance. Two nearer airports do not help: Dhanbad's airport, 69 km away, has had no scheduled passenger flights since the 1980s, and Bokaro's, 88 km away, was built but still waiting for its DGCA licence when the civil aviation ministry answered in the Rajya Sabha on 27 July 2026. The Giridih district website's '103 km from Ranchi airport' is not a road distance - it is shorter even than the straight line, about 109 km - and its '117 km from Gaya airport' is shorter than that straight line too, which is 146 km.

  • Parasnath station (PNME) is at Isri on the Grand Chord line between Gaya and Asansol, in East Central Railway's Dhanbad division
  • It is about 23 km from Madhuban by road - west to Dumri, then north on NH-114A - or 30 to 40 minutes by taxi
  • Giridih station is about 30 km from Madhuban on NH-114A
  • Train timings change often; check NTES or the IRCTC app rather than a timetable copied onto a travel site

Rules on the hill, and when to go

Parasnath is protected as a sacred site, and the rules are now enforced rather than advisory. On 5 January 2023 the Union environment ministry stayed the tourism clause of the 2019 eco-sensitive zone notification for the Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary, suspending all tourism and eco-tourism activity on the hill, and directed Jharkhand to enforce bans on liquor, intoxicants, non-vegetarian food, loud music, pets, and unauthorised camping and trekking. On 2 May 2025 the Jharkhand High Court ordered the state to enforce those bans and to deploy more Home Guards; only 25 had been covering about 16,000 acres. The vandana continues as before - what stopped is the hill's use as a tourist destination.

  • No liquor, intoxicants or non-vegetarian food on the hill, including anything brought from outside
  • There is no ropeway: no report up to September 2026 shows one built or approved, and tourism construction on the hill has been stayed since 2023
  • Best season: October to March; the summit is cold from November to February, and April to June is hot for a climb that runs into the afternoon
  • Busiest day: Moksh Saptami (Shravan Shukla Saptami, late July to August), when Madhuban's dharamshalas are booked months ahead - in 2024 it fell on 11 August
  • Kartik Purnima also draws large crowds
  • For the Santhal community the hill is Marang Buru, their supreme deity; their traditional Sendra hunt on the Baisakh full moon (mid-April) has been a point of friction with the Jain community since the 2023 bans

Planning it from Ranchi: two days, where to stay, and the cab fare

Shikharji from Ranchi is a two-day trip at minimum, and its shape is set by the early start. Leave Ranchi around midday, reach Madhuban by late afternoon, eat early and sleep early. Day two is the vandana. Pilgrims are usually back in Madhuban between about 14:00 and 17:00, so a same-evening drive lands in Ranchi around 19:00 to 21:30; after 8 to 12 hours on foot, a second night in Madhuban is the kinder plan. The accommodation is the big Jain dharamshalas - the Terapanthi Kothi (over 400 rooms), the Shwetambar Kothi, the Bispanthi Kothi and Uttar Pradesh Prakash Bhawan, which takes bookings online. Their kitchens serve dinner before sunset, which is worth knowing if you are not Jain. When Madhuban is full, Giridih town, 30 km away, is the fallback. Raahi Saarthi's fixed fares from Ranchi to Madhuban are below.

All-inclusive of fuel, tolls, parking, driver allowance and 5% GST; a one-way booking carries no empty-return charge. Doli charges and dharamshala rooms are paid separately. The 4-day Jharkhand pilgrimage package - Rajrappa, Deoghar, Basukinath and Shikharji, with the cab waiting at Madhuban through the vandana day - starts at ₹18,999 for a sedan.
