Distance
1250 km
Starts at
₹19,999
Best time to visit
October to February. Avoid Anasara and Rath Yatra, and note the cyclone risk in October and November

The Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar 4-day tour from Ranchi covers about 1,250 km, includes Jagannath Temple darshan, the Konark Sun Temple, Lingaraj, Udayagiri-Khandagiri, Dhauli and Nandankanan, and starts at ₹19,999 for a sedan carrying four passengers.

Odisha's golden triangle, done in the only order that does not waste a kilometre. Bhubaneswar sits on the road home, 60 km short of Puri, so its temples and caves cost you almost no extra driving - which is why this package adds a whole day of sightseeing over the 3-day version for ₹4,000. Day two is Puri and its beaches, day three is Konark and the Marine Drive, and day four picks up Bhubaneswar on the way out. Build the Bhubaneswar day so it is not a Monday: Nandankanan, the Konark light-and-sound show and the Dhauli show are all closed that day.

What this package covers

  • Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri, at the 05:30 opening

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Ranchi → Puri (512 km)

Pickup at 05:30, south through Khunti, Chaibasa and the Keonjhar mining belt, lunch at Keonjhargarh, then Cuttack and Bhubaneswar on dual carriageway. Reach Puri around 17:00. Evening on the beach. Overnight in Puri.

  2. 2

    Puri - darshan, Mahaprasad, beaches

At the Singhadwara by 05:30 for darshan - phones, cameras, leather and bags stay in the car. Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazaar afterwards. Then Gundicha Temple 3 km up Bada Danda, Lokanath, and the afternoon at Golden Beach, which holds Blue Flag certification and has lifeguards on the flagged stretch. Swim only where the flags are; the rip currents here are not a formality. Sunset at Swargadwar. Overnight in Puri.

  3. 3

Marine Drive → Konark → Puri

Leave at 08:30 on the 35 km Marine Drive, sea on one side and the Balukhand-Konark sanctuary casuarina belt on the other, with a stop at Ramachandi. Konark Sun Temple through the late morning - it is an open, shadeless site, so earlier is better - then the ASI museum, which closes on Fridays, and Chandrabhaga beach. Back in Puri by evening, or stay for the light-and-sound show and accept the drive back in the dark. Overnight in Puri.

  4. 4

Bhubaneswar on the way → Ranchi

Check out at 06:00 and drive to Bhubaneswar, 60 km. Lingaraj Temple from the outside viewing platform or inside if you are admitted, then Mukteshwar and Rajarani, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, and Dhauli Shanti Stupa with the Ashokan rock edict at its foot. Nandankanan instead of the temples if there are children in the car - open 08:00 in winter, closed Mondays. On the road to Ranchi by 13:00, drop by about 22:00.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar from Ranchi?

Four is the realistic minimum: one day out, one day for Puri, one for Konark and the Marine Drive, and one that picks up Bhubaneswar on the way home. Raahi Saarthi prices that at ₹19,999 for a sedan. Three days covers Puri and Konark only, and five adds Chilika at Satapada for the dolphins. Any attempt to fit all three cities into three days ends up as more than a thousand kilometres of driving for a single day of sightseeing.

Which day of the week should we not keep for Bhubaneswar?

Monday. Nandankanan Zoological Park is closed every Monday, and so are both the Konark and the Dhauli light-and-sound shows - a Monday in Bhubaneswar loses three headline attractions at once. The Konark Archaeological Museum closes on Fridays instead, though the Sun Temple itself has no weekly closure. Raahi Saarthi checks this against your dates when we send the itinerary.

How far is Konark from Puri and Bhubaneswar?

Konark is 35 km from Puri along the Marine Drive, about 45 minutes to an hour, and about 68 km from Bhubaneswar, an hour and a half to two hours. The Puri side is the better drive - a smooth two-lane road with the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Balukhand-Konark sanctuary on the other, and Chandrabhaga beach at the far end.

Is swimming safe at Puri beach?

Only inside the flagged stretch, and only with the nulia lifeguards watching. Puri sees recurring tourist drownings, almost always where people ignored the flags or the verbal warnings, and the rip currents here change with the tide. The Blue Flag stretch of Golden Beach is the patrolled one. Do not swim at Chakratirtha or Swargadwar, do not swim after dark, and do not swim in a rough post-monsoon sea. Our drivers are briefed to point this out rather than leave it unsaid.
