Ranchi to Puri is 512 km by the short road through Chaibasa and Keonjhar and takes 11 to 12 hours by cab, or about 580 km on the wider Jamshedpur-Balasore highway route; Raahi Saarthi one-way fares to Jagannath Dham start at ₹9,499 for a sedan, inter-state permit included.

Ranchi to Puri is a full day in the car whichever way you go, and the two ways are genuinely different. The short road, 512 km, drops south on NH-20 through Khunti, Chaibasa and Keonjhar and joins the Golden Quadrilateral at Chandikhole - it is the fewest kilometres but most of the Jharkhand and Keonjhar section is two-lane shared with iron-ore trucks. The long road, about 580 km, runs out through Jamshedpur, Baharagora and Baripada to Balasore and then NH-16 all the way, which is four to six lanes for the last 250 km. We pick between them on the morning, on the truck situation and on who is in the car, and the fare is the same either way. What does not change: a 05:30 departure from Ranchi is what gets you to Puri in daylight.

What you'll pass on the way

  • Khunti and Chaibasa - the first two hours, plateau and sal forest
  • Keonjhargarh - the ore-mining town roughly halfway, and the usual lunch stop
  • Kalinganagar (Duburi) - where the road meets the Chandikhole highway
  • Cuttack and Bhubaneswar - the last hour is dual carriageway
  • Pipili - the appliqué-craft town 20 km short of Puri, worth fifteen minutes

Things to do there

  • Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri - one of the four Char Dham
  • Golden Beach - one of India's Blue Flag beaches, at the Chakratirtha end
  • Konark Sun Temple - 35 km along the Marine Drive
  • Chandrabhaga beach and the Konark museum
  • Chilika Lake at Satapada - 48 km, for the Irrawaddy dolphins

Frequently asked questions

How far is Puri from Ranchi by road and how long does it take?

Puri is 512 km from Ranchi by the short road through Khunti, Chaibasa and Keonjhar, or about 580 km by the wider Jamshedpur-Baripada-Balasore route on NH-16. Either way a cab takes 11 to 12 hours including breaks. The distance-calculator figure of six hours you will see quoted is not achievable on this corridor and no driver we have ever sent has come close to it.

What is the taxi fare from Ranchi to Puri?

Raahi Saarthi's one-way Ranchi to Puri taxi fare starts at ₹9,499 for a sedan, ₹11,999 for an Ertiga SUV, ₹13,999 for an Innova Crysta and ₹20,999 for a 12-seat Tempo Traveller. The Odisha inter-state permit, all tolls, parking, fuel, driver allowance and 5% GST are inside those numbers - which is the difference between our fare and a ₹6,000 quote that adds ₹945 of tolls and a border charge at the end.

Is a Jharkhand taxi allowed into Odisha, and who pays the border tax?

Yes. Raahi Saarthi runs Odisha trips on an All India Tourist Permit, which is the national permit that covers inter-state operation, and we pay it - you never hand money to anyone at a check-post. Carrying the permit, fitness, insurance and driver badge is our job; if a check-post on NH-16 stops the car, the driver has the papers.

Should I drive to Puri from Ranchi or take the train?

For two people with time, the train is easier - it is an overnight and you arrive rested. For a family of four to seven, a car wins, because you get Konark, the Marine Drive, Chilika and Bhubaneswar's temples without booking anything else, and Puri's own sights are spread over 70 km. The honest trade is one very long driving day at each end.

Where should we break the Ranchi to Puri drive?

If you want to split it, Balasore on NH-16 is the best halfway stop - decent highway hotels and it leaves a comfortable four hours into Puri the next morning. Keonjhargarh on the short route works for lunch but has thin hotel stock, and Jamshedpur is only three hours out, which is too early to be useful as a night halt.

Can non-Hindus enter the Jagannath Temple in Puri?

No. Only Hindus are permitted inside Shree Jagannath Temple and the rule is enforced at the Lion's Gate without exception - a US ambassador was turned back in 2024. Non-Hindu visitors can take Patitapavana darshan of the deity's image from outside the Lion's Gate and view the temple from the Raghunandan Library rooftop opposite. Konark, the beaches, Chilika and everything in Bhubaneswar except Lingaraj are open to everyone, so a mixed group still has a full trip.
