Waterfalls near Ranchi - distance, height, steps and the best month for each, from Jonha and Hundru to Lodh

The waterfalls near Ranchi start about 40 km out with Jonha (150 ft, about 722 steps) and Dassam (144 ft, about 185 steps), then Hundru at 45 km (320 ft, about 745 steps), Panch Gagh at 55 km and Hirni at 75 km, while Jharkhand's highest, Lodh Falls (143 m), is about 197 km away beyond Netarhat; Hundru, Jonha and Dassam fit into one 157 km day, which Raahi Saarthi runs from ₹2,999.

Ranchi sits on a plateau, and its waterfalls are where the rivers drop off the edge of it - which is why there are so many within a couple of hours, and why the biggest ones come with long stairways. Here is every fall people ask us about, with the distance, the height and the climb, the best month for each, and how they group into trips.

Hundru, Jonha and Dassam: the one-day trio

The three big falls east and south of Ranchi make one day: Hundru first at its 08:00 opening, Jonha 24 km on, and Dassam last, 53 to 64 km from Jonha but the closest of the three to Ranchi on the way home - a loop of about 157 km, or about 165 km taking Sita Falls between Hundru and Jonha. Sita is about 7 km from Jonha and 24 km from Hundru, a quieter fall that Jharkhand Tourism calls one of the lesser known. Our waterfalls day-trip guide (Ranchi Waterfalls in One Day) times the loop hour by hour, and the Hundru guide (Hundru Falls Steps (745), Timings, Entry Fee & Safety) covers its 745 steps stage by stage. Raahi Saarthi runs the loop as a fixed day tour from ₹2,999 for a hatchback.

The Khunti side: Panch Gagh and Hirni

South of Ranchi, off the road to Chaibasa, are two gentler falls that make a second, quieter day. Panch Gagh, 55 km out beyond Khunti, is a river split into five low drops - an easy walk of about 200 m from the car park, which makes it the family picnic of the set. Hirni, 75 km from Ranchi near Bandgaon in West Singhbhum, is about 24 km from Panch Gagh by road: a 37 m (121 ft) fall on the Ramgarha in thick forest, with a tourist complex across the river, reached on a footpath from the car park. Together they are about 150 km of driving from Ranchi.

  • Panch Gagh to Hirni: about 24 km by road
  • Carry water and lunch, especially for Hirni, where there is little to buy
  • Hirni is remote; go in daylight and not alone

The Netarhat falls and Lodh

Jharkhand's tallest waterfall, Lodh, and three more falls are around Netarhat, 156 km west of Ranchi, so they belong on a Netarhat trip rather than a day out from the city. Upper Ghaghri is a small fall about 4 km from the Netarhat bus stand, below the dam's overflow. Lower Ghaghri is about 10 km out, the last 2 km on a forest path - Wikipedia gives it 98 m, Jharkhand Tourism about 100 ft. Sadni Falls, 34 km from Netarhat in Gumla district, drops 60 m on the Sankh. And Lodh Falls, 60 km from Netarhat near Mahuadanr, is the highest waterfall in Jharkhand at about 143 m (468 ft), on the Burha river; Raahi Saarthi's 2-day Netarhat package stops there on the way home, and our Netarhat plan (Netarhat Tour Plan for 2 Days: Itinerary & Budget) shows how it fits.

  • Lodh Falls from Ranchi: about 197 km via Bero, Lohardaga, Ghaghra, Bishunpur and Mahuadanr, 5 to 5.5 hours
  • July to September is when these falls are fullest, but the viewpoints at Netarhat are often in cloud and the ghat road is slippery
  • Netarhat to Lodh is about 1.5 to 2 hours, the last stretch on forest road

Usri Falls, near Giridih

Usri is the outlier: about 195 km from Ranchi, 13 km east of Giridih town on the road to Tundi, where the Usri river comes down off the Parasnath side in three streams about 12 m high, over a broad rock bed with a watchtower above it. It is a favourite picnic spot over Christmas and New Year. From Ranchi it fits best on a Shikharji or Giridih trip - Madhuban, the base for Parasnath, is on the same road about 30 km short of Giridih - and our Ranchi to Giridih page (Ranchi to Giridih) has the drive.

Safety, and checking the status on the day

Every fall on this list is dangerous in the water. People have drowned while bathing above Hundru (October 2023 and October 2024) and upstream of Dassam (October 2025), and Jonha is a no-bathing fall. After heavy rain, and at Hundru after every release from Getalsud Dam, the district can issue an advisory or close the lower steps - so check the current status on our pages for Hundru Falls, Jonha Falls (Gautamdhara) and Dassam Falls on the morning you go.

  • Stay out of the pools and off wet rock at the edge, however calm the water looks
  • Do what the tourist guards say; they know where people have drowned
  • Wear shoes with grip - the stairways at Hundru and Jonha are long and slippery when wet
  • Phone signal is patchy at Hundru, Jonha and Dassam; carry water and a power bank

The best month for each fall

The rule of thumb is the same everywhere: the biggest water comes in July to September, when the steps are slippery and closures happen, and the safest good flow is October to January.
