The coldest place in Jharkhand depends on what you measure: the lowest official reading of winter 2025-26 was 0.8°C at Gumla on 15 January 2026, local thermometers at McCluskieganj showed -0.5°C to -1.5°C on 8 January 2026, and Netarhat, at about 1,100 m, is the coldest on average, running roughly 3°C below Ranchi all year. Netarhat is also the nearest true hill station to Ranchi, 156 km and about 4.5 hours away, and Raahi Saarthi runs it as a 2-day package from ₹6,499 for a sedan.
Search for the coldest place in Jharkhand and most pages say Netarhat and stop. That is right about the average and wrong about the coldest night, which in recent winters has gone to Gumla, Khunti, Kanke and - on unofficial thermometers - McCluskieganj. This guide sets out what the IMD's Ranchi Meteorological Centre actually recorded, which hill stations near Ranchi are genuinely higher and cooler than the city, and what Netarhat is like month by month, with the numbers we could not verify marked as such.
The coldest place in Jharkhand has three honest answers
Ask three slightly different questions and you get three different places. All three are worth knowing before you plan a winter trip, because the place that posts the lowest number on one freezing morning is not the place that is coldest week after week.
- Lowest official temperature: Gumla, 0.8°C on 15 January 2026, from the IMD Ranchi Meteorological Centre - the lowest official reading we found for winter 2025-26. Khunti (1.4°C, 10 January 2026), Kanke on the northern edge of Ranchi (2.5°C, 17 December 2024) and Kullu in Chatra district (1.2°C, 15 January 2024) have also been the state's coldest in recent winters
- Lowest unofficial temperature: McCluskieganj, where local thermometers read -0.5°C, -0.7°C and -1.5°C on the morning of 8 January 2026. McCluskieganj has no IMD station, so these are not official records
- Coldest on average: Netarhat. At about 1,100 m it is the highest town in Jharkhand and runs about 3°C cooler than Ranchi in every month, by day and by night - but it is rarely the coldest place on any single night
Recorded minimums, with dates and who measured them
These are the state-lowest readings from the last three winters that we could pin to a date and a source. The official figures come from the Ranchi Meteorological Centre's bulletins, as carried by PTI and local papers. Read each one as a single morning, not an average: on the day Gumla recorded 0.8°C, Ranchi city was at 9.0°C.
| Date | Place | Minimum | Ranchi city that morning | Recorded by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 Jan 2026 | Gumla | 0.8°C | 9.0°C | IMD Ranchi; lowest official reading we found for 2025-26 |
| 10 Jan 2026 | Khunti | 1.4°C | 6.4°C | IMD Ranchi, automatic weather station |
| 8 Jan 2026 | McCluskieganj | -0.5°C to -1.5°C | 6.6-8°C | Local thermometers, not IMD; official readings that morning were about 2°C at Kanke and Khunti |
| 30 Dec 2025 | Gumla | 2.4°C | 5.4°C | IMD Ranchi |
| 14 Jan 2025 | Netarhat | 8.3°C | 12.4°C | Ranchi Met Centre, as reported by ETV Bharat |
| 17 Dec 2024 | Kanke (Ranchi) | 2.5°C | 9°C | Ranchi Met Centre, via PTI |
| 15 Jan 2024 | Kullu (Chatra) | 1.2°C | 6.4°C | Ranchi Met Centre, via PTI; reported as the season's state low |
IMD's long-record stations have gone lower still: Daltonganj 0.0°C, Hazaribagh 0.5°C and Ranchi 0.6°C, from IMD climate tables that do not give the dates. We have not seen IMD's full season summary for 2025-26, and we could not find a dated state low for winter 2022-23, so that winter is left out rather than guessed.
Why McCluskieganj and Gumla get colder nights than Netarhat
Height sets the average, but the coldest single night is decided by the sky. McCluskieganj sits at about 450-490 m - lower than Ranchi's 651 m - and still recorded sub-zero readings on its local thermometers. Daltonganj, on the plains at about 215 m, holds a record low of 0.0°C, below Ranchi's 0.6°C. Our reading of the pattern, and it is an inference rather than a measured finding, is that open, dry countryside under a clear and still winter sky loses heat fastest, which is why frost-prone places such as Gumla, Khunti and Kanke keep topping the bulletins while Netarhat led the state list only once in all the reports we read. Kanke shows it at close range: about 13 km north of Ranchi station, it read 2.5°C on 17 December 2024 while Ranchi city read 9°C.
- 7 January 2026: dew froze into a thin layer of ice on grass and vehicles at Murhu in Khunti district
- 8 January 2026: a white frost covered the fields at McCluskieganj and water left out in open containers froze
- Frost forms when moisture on the ground freezes on a clear night; snow falls from cloud. We have found no report of snowfall anywhere in Jharkhand, Netarhat included
Hill stations near Ranchi, ranked honestly by altitude and distance
If a hill station means somewhere noticeably higher and cooler than Ranchi, with a town to stay in, there is exactly one within a day's drive: Netarhat, 156 km and about 4.5 hours west through Lohardaga, Ghaghra and Bishunpur. Everything closer is at Ranchi's height or below it. That does not make them bad trips - Hazaribagh and McCluskieganj are good winter weekends - but they will not be cooler than the city you left.
| Place | Altitude | From Ranchi | Drive | What it really is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ranchi (for reference) | 651 m (2,136 ft) | - | - | Plateau city; the summer capital of Bihar until 2000 |
| Netarhat | About 1,100 m (3,600-3,700 ft) | 156 km | About 4.5 hr | The only true hill station near Ranchi; about 3°C cooler than the city all year |
| Parasnath (Madhuban base) | Summit 1,365 m; Madhuban about 390 m | About 160 km (about 183 km via Hazaribagh) | 4-4.5 hr | Highest point in Jharkhand, but you sleep at the base and trek to the top |
| Dalma Top | 915 m (3,000 ft) | About 121 km | About 3 hr (our estimate) | Forest hilltop with a Shiva temple in Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary; no town |
| Ayodhya Hills (Purulia, West Bengal) | Village and dams about 480-600 m; top peak about 700 m | About 114 km | 3-3.5 hr (our estimate) | Interstate trip; the part you visit is lower than Ranchi |
| Hazaribagh | About 610 m (2,000 ft) | 93 km | About 2 hr | Plateau town at Ranchi's height, with Canary Hill 3 km out |
| McCluskieganj | About 450-490 m | 65 km | About 2 hr | Anglo-Indian village below Ranchi's height; frost on clear winter nights |
| Patratu Valley | Viewpoint about 546 m; dam about 405 m | 40 km | About 1.5 hr | A ghat road dropping off the plateau; warmer than Ranchi |
Road distances from central Ranchi; Dalma Top, Ayodhya Hills and Madhuban are measured from Ranchi Junction. Altitudes from Jharkhand Tourism, district and forest-department websites, and satellite terrain data. Vehicle-entry rules on the Dalma summit road are set by the forest department and were not verified.
Highest is not the same as coldest - and it is not Netarhat
Three altitude facts get muddled on almost every list of hill stations near Ranchi. Parasnath (Sammed Shikharji) in Giridih district is the highest point in Jharkhand at 1,365 m, though the Giridih district website gives 1,350 m. Netarhat, at about 1,100 m, is the highest town, which is a different thing. And Ranchi itself sits at 651 m on the Chota Nagpur plateau - high enough that it served as the summer capital of Bihar until Jharkhand was formed in 2000.
- Parasnath: a summit you reach on foot from Madhuban, a pilgrim village at about 390 m, with about 9 km of climbing; nobody stays at altitude there
- Netarhat: Jharkhand Tourism gives about 3,622 ft and Wikipedia 1,128 m; once the summer retreat of the British Governor
- Ranchi: 651 m (2,136 ft); the Ranchi district administration describes its climate as moderate and notes it was Bihar's summer capital until 2000
- Pahari Mandir, Ranchi's own hill: 2,140 ft above sea level and 350 ft above the surrounding ground, reached by 468 steps
- Quiz sites that name Netarhat as the highest point in Jharkhand are wrong - it is Parasnath
Netarhat weather, month by month
There are no published climate normals for Netarhat and no official station feed we could find, so any page calling itself Netarhat weather today is showing a model estimate. The rule of thumb that holds up is that Netarhat runs about 3°C cooler than Ranchi, day and night, in every month - roughly what its extra 450 m of height predicts. That makes it properly cold in winter and pleasant, not cool, in summer. The figure you will see repeated, that Netarhat summers are 22-28°C, is wrong for the afternoons: April and May days typically reach 33-35°C, against Ranchi's IMD May average high of 36.9°C. It is the nights that sit in the low twenties. For a live forecast, check the IMD Ranchi forecast and take about three degrees off.
| Month | Typical day high | Typical night low | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 20-21°C | 7-9°C | Coldest month; heavy jacket after dark and at sunrise |
| February | 23-25°C | 10-12°C | Cold mornings, mild days |
| March | 28-29°C | 14-16°C | Warm afternoons, cool nights |
| April | 33-34°C | 18-21°C | Hot afternoons, pleasant nights |
| May | 33-35°C | 21-23°C | Hottest month; cooler than Ranchi, not cool |
| June | 30-31°C | 21-23°C | Humid; the rains begin |
| July | 26-28°C | 20-22°C | Monsoon; waterfalls full, roads wet |
| August | 25-27°C | 20-22°C | Monsoon; views often in cloud |
| September | 25-27°C | 19-21°C | Rain easing; falls still strong |
| October | 25-26°C | 16-18°C | Season opens; clear skies return |
| November | 22-24°C | 11-13°C | Cold nights begin; pack a jacket |
| December | 20-22°C | 8-10°C | Cold; heavy jacket for the evenings |
Modelled, not measured. Each range spans three estimates: ERA5-Land reanalysis for 2016-2025, Weatherspark's reanalysis-based averages, and IMD's 1991-2020 Ranchi normals adjusted for Netarhat's height. A cold wave can push nights below the range; the one dated Netarhat reading we found was 8.3°C on 14 January 2025, when it was the coldest place in the state.
Best time to visit Netarhat
October to March is the season: clear skies for the Magnolia Point sunset and the sunrise point, comfortable days and cold nights. Within it, December and January are the coldest, with typical nights of about 7-10°C and lower in a cold wave. If you are coming for the waterfalls rather than the views, come in the monsoon, July to September, when they are at their fullest - and accept a slippery ghat road and viewpoints that are often lost in cloud.
- October-November: the season opens; about 22-26°C by day and 11-18°C at night
- December-January: the coldest stretch; about 20-22°C by day and 7-10°C at night
- February-March: warming up; clear mornings and afternoons reaching 28-29°C by March
- April-June: afternoons of 30-35°C; worth it only for the cooler nights
- July-September: Lodh Falls and the Upper and Lower Ghaghri falls at their best; wet roads and cloud
- Plan to reach Netarhat before 18:00 in winter - Raahi Saarthi drivers do not run the forested ghat road after dark
Patratu Valley weather: warmer than Ranchi, not cooler
Patratu turns up on most lists of hill stations near Ranchi, and it is a beautiful drive, but it is a road down off the plateau rather than up. The valley viewpoint is at about 546 m and Patratu Dam at about 405 m, both below Ranchi's 651 m, so Patratu is usually 1-2°C warmer than Ranchi by day. Modelled averages for 2016-2025 put a January afternoon at the dam at about 23°C with nights around 11°C, and May afternoons at about 37°C. It is 40 km from Ranchi, about 1.5 hours by cab. Go between October and March, and for the sunset from the upper hairpins, November to February gives the clearest light.
What to pack, and what the cool-weather trips cost
For Netarhat, McCluskieganj or anywhere on the Gumla and Khunti side between December and February, pack for a near-freezing dawn and a 20°C afternoon on the same day. Raahi Saarthi's fares below are fixed and include fuel, tolls, parking and driver allowance; hotels and meals are extra.
- A proper winter jacket, plus a cap and gloves for the sunrise point and any pre-dawn start
- Layers rather than one heavy sweater - January afternoons at Netarhat still reach about 20°C
- Warm socks and closed shoes: on clear January mornings in 2026 there was frost on the grass and cars in McCluskieganj and Khunti
- A torch for the early walk to the sunrise point
- For the Parasnath trek, pack for a cold summit from November to February; pilgrims usually start between 02:00 and 04:00
| Trip | Distance | Fare from |
|---|---|---|
| Netarhat 2 days / 1 night package | 340 km | ₹6,499 sedan (4) · ₹8,499 Ertiga (6) · ₹9,999 Innova Crysta (7) |
| Betla + Netarhat 3 days / 2 nights package | 520 km | ₹12,999 sedan (4) |
| Ranchi to Netarhat one-way | 156 km | ₹3,499 hatchback (4) |
| Ranchi to Hazaribagh one-way | 93 km | ₹1,899 hatchback (4) |
| Hazaribagh + Patratu day tour | 230 km | ₹3,999 hatchback (4) · ₹4,499 sedan (4) |
| Ranchi to Patratu Valley round trip | 40 km each way | ₹2,299 hatchback (4) |
All-inclusive of fuel, tolls, parking and driver allowance. Not included: hotels and meals. A decent Netarhat room runs about ₹1,800-3,500 a night; book at least two weeks ahead for any weekend from October to February.

Which is the coldest place in Jharkhand?
It depends on what you measure. The lowest official reading of winter 2025-26 was 0.8°C at Gumla on 15 January 2026 (IMD Ranchi); local thermometers at McCluskieganj read -0.5°C to -1.5°C on 8 January 2026, though that is not an official record; and Netarhat, at about 1,100 m, is the coldest place on average, about 3°C cooler than Ranchi all year.
What is the nearest hill station from Ranchi?
Netarhat is the nearest true hill station to Ranchi: 156 km west via Lohardaga, about 4.5 hours by cab, at about 1,100 m against Ranchi's 651 m. Raahi Saarthi runs it as a 2-day, 1-night package from ₹6,499 for a sedan, which is the only way to see both the Magnolia Point sunset and the sunrise.
Is there a hill station near Ranchi within 100 km?
Not in the sense of higher, cooler ground. Hazaribagh (93 km, about 610 m) and McCluskieganj (65 km, about 450-490 m) are the closest cool-weather getaways, but both are at or below Ranchi's 651 m, and Patratu Valley (40 km) is lower still. The nearest place that is actually higher and cooler is Netarhat, 156 km away.
What is Netarhat weather like through the year?
Netarhat runs about 3°C cooler than Ranchi in every month. Typical January days are 20-21°C with nights of 7-9°C, December is 20-22°C by day and 8-10°C at night, and April-May afternoons reach 33-35°C with nights of 18-23°C. These are model estimates, because Netarhat has no published station climate data.
What is the best time to visit Netarhat?
October to March is the best time to visit Netarhat, for clear views at Magnolia Point and the sunrise point; December and January are the coldest months, with nights around 7-10°C. July to September is best for waterfalls such as Lodh Falls, but the ghat road is slippery and the viewpoints are often in cloud.
What is the weather like in Patratu Valley?
Patratu Valley is warmer than Ranchi, not cooler: the viewpoint is at about 546 m and Patratu Dam at about 405 m, below Ranchi's 651 m, so days run 1-2°C warmer. Modelled averages put January at about 23°C by day and 11°C at night and May afternoons at about 37°C; October to March is the time to go.
Does it snow in Jharkhand?
We have found no report of snowfall anywhere in Jharkhand, Netarhat included. What does happen is ground frost on clear winter nights: ice formed on grass and vehicles at Murhu in Khunti district on 7 January 2026, and frost whitened the fields at McCluskieganj on 8 January 2026.
Which is the highest point in Jharkhand - Netarhat or Parasnath?
Parasnath Hill (Sammed Shikharji) in Giridih district is the highest point in Jharkhand at 1,365 m (the district website gives 1,350 m). Netarhat, at about 1,100 m, is the highest town and the state's only true hill station, but it is not the highest point.
McCluskieganj me minus temperature kaise hota hai?
McCluskieganj is not high - at about 450-490 m it is lower than Ranchi - so its sub-zero readings are not about altitude. The -0.5°C to -1.5°C recorded there on 8 January 2026 came from local thermometers on a clear, still night, not from an IMD station; the official state lows that morning were about 2°C.
