On the Kanchi river near Taimara village, Dassam Falls drops 144 feet (44 m) and, outside the monsoon, splits into about ten streams - the popular explanation for the name 'Dassam' (das, ten). It is about 40 km from Ranchi on the Ranchi-Tata road (old NH-33, now NH-43), with the last 12 km on a village road, and about 185 steps lead down to the base. It is gentler and quicker to see than Hundru, but the water here has a long record of drownings: look, do not swim.
How to reach Dassam Falls from Ranchi
From Ranchi take the Ranchi-Tata road (old NH-33, now numbered NH-43) south-east towards Bundu and turn off near Taimara; the last 12 km or so is on MDR-031 and a village road. That is about 40 km in all - 37 to 45 km depending on where in Ranchi you start - and 1 hr 10 min to 1 hr 20 min by cab. There is no public transport to the falls themselves.

FAQs about Dassam Falls
How far is Dassam Falls from Ranchi?
Dassam Falls is about 40 km from Ranchi by road, roughly 1 hr 10 min to 1 hr 20 min by cab, via the Ranchi-Tata road (old NH-33, now numbered NH-43) and a 12 km turn-off near Taimara. Depending on where in Ranchi you start the figure runs from 37 to 45 km; Jharkhand Tourism quotes 45 km.
How far is Dassam Falls from Ranchi railway station and Hatia?
Dassam Falls is about 40 km from Ranchi Junction railway station (37-43 km depending on the way through the city) and about 45 km from Hatia (41-48 km), both via NH-43 and Taimara; allow 1 hr 10 min to 1 hr 30 min by cab. The 26 km and 31 km on the district website are close to straight-line distances, not road distances.
How many steps are there at Dassam Falls?
About 185 steps lead from the top of Dassam Falls down to the base, according to ETV Bharat's July 2025 report; in heavy monsoon flow only the first 150 or so are open. The 'over 300 steps' on some travel sites is not supported by any news or official source.
Is it safe to swim at Dassam Falls?
No. Stay out of the water at Dassam Falls: a visitor drowned while bathing about 1 km upstream of the main fall in October 2025, and the falls have a long record of drownings. Twenty-two Paryatak Mitra tourist guards were posted there in 2025, and their job is to keep visitors out of the fast water.
What is the best time to visit Dassam Falls?
October to January, the season Jharkhand Tourism recommends: the fall still carries plenty of water, the streams separate, and the steps are safer. July to September brings the biggest flow, but the rock face disappears under water, the lower steps can be shut, and the district issues safety advisories - one covering Dassam was in force on 23 September 2026.
How far is Dassam Falls from Jonha Falls?
Dassam and Jonha Falls are 53-64 km apart by road, about 1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 40 min by cab - not the 20-25 minutes many itineraries quote. They sit on different highways out of Ranchi, Dassam off the Ranchi-Tata road and Jonha off the Ranchi-Purulia road, so a Hundru-Jonha-Dassam day from Ranchi is about 157 km of driving.
How far is Dassam Falls from Patratu Valley?
Dassam Falls to the Patratu Valley viewpoint is about 68-73 km by road, 2 hr to 2 hr 15 min by cab, and to the Patratu dam and boating point about 75 km. The two are on opposite sides of Ranchi, so the drive crosses the city on NH-43 and then goes out through Kanke and Pithoria.
Is Dassam Falls suitable for kids?
Yes, with close supervision. The 185 steps to the base are manageable for most children, but keep them back from the rock edges and out of the water entirely.
