Ranchi waterfalls in one day - Hundru, Jonha, Dassam itinerary

Hundru, Jonha and Dassam Falls can all be seen in one day from Ranchi on a loop of about 157 km, a 06:30 to 18:00 day with about five hours of driving. Do Hundru first when it opens at 08:00, while its roughly 745 steps are still cool, then Jonha 24 km away, and Dassam last - it is 53 to 64 km from Jonha, but the closest of the three to Ranchi on the way home. Raahi Saarthi runs the loop from Rs 2,999.

Few Indian cities have three big waterfalls within 50 km. Hundru Falls (320 ft), Jonha Falls (150 ft) and Dassam Falls (144 ft, split into about ten streams) are all 40 to 45 km from Ranchi and can be done in a single day - if you start early and take them in the right order. The one thing most itineraries get wrong is the gap between Jonha and Dassam: they are on different rivers, either side of the Ranchi-Tata highway, 53 km apart by the shortest road rather than a 25-minute hop.

The three falls at a glance

All three are where rivers of the Subarnarekha system drop off the edge of the Ranchi plateau, and each has a stairway down to the base. Hundru is the tallest in Ranchi district but not in Jharkhand - that is Lodh Falls in Latehar. For Hundru's step count, both roads to it and distances from 19 places, see our separate Hundru Falls guide at Hundru Falls: Steps, Timings, Distance from Ranchi.

Heights from Jharkhand Tourism and the Ranchi district site. Step counts as reported by ETV Bharat in July 2025 - none of the three has an official count, and published Hundru figures range from 650 to 800. Jharkhand Tourism lists Hundru's visiting hours as 08:00-17:00 and Dassam's as 09:00-17:00.

The order matters

Go Hundru, then Jonha, then Dassam. Hundru is the furthest out (45 km east), has by far the longest stairway and opens at 08:00, so be there at opening with fresh legs. Jonha is only 24 km from Hundru. Dassam is the long leg - 53 to 64 km from Jonha depending on the road, 1 hr 20 min to 1 hr 40 min - but it is the closest of the three to Ranchi, so it is the right one to finish on. Its listed hours end at 17:00, so leave Jonha by about 13:45.

  • 06:30 - Pickup from your Ranchi hotel
  • 08:00 - Hundru Falls opens: the top viewpoint, then down the roughly 745 steps to the base
  • 10:15 - Climb back up (30-40 minutes) and leave Hundru
  • 11:00 - Jonha Falls (24 km, 40-45 min) and the Buddhist shrine
  • 12:45 - Lunch at the Jonha stalls, or carry a packed lunch
  • 13:45 - Drive to Dassam Falls (53-64 km, 1 hr 20 min - 1 hr 40 min)
  • 15:15 - Dassam Falls, about 185 steps to the base
  • 16:45 - Drive back to Ranchi (about 40 km, 1 hr 15 min)
  • 18:00 - Reach Ranchi

Safety and current status (September 2026)

On 23 September 2026 the Ranchi district administration issued a safety advisory for Hundru, Jonha, Dassam, Sita and Remix falls after water releases from Getalsud Dam, upstream of Hundru, which opened four gates on 1-2 September. No formal closure had been reported, but all three are running in spate and parts of the stairways can be roped off in high flow - in July 2025 the lowest 50 steps at Hundru were closed, and at Dassam visitors were allowed down only the first 150 of its 185 steps. Check the status on the morning you go; your driver will know.

  • Stay out of the water at all three. There is no formal bathing ban, but people have drowned above Hundru (October 2023 and October 2024) and upstream of Dassam (October 2025)
  • Known danger spots at Hundru: Saheb Chikiya and the Hundru Baba spot above the fall, Jogiya Dah and Bhandar Dah below it - the water looks shallow and is not
  • Do what the tourist guards say - Hundru had 15 of them and Dassam 22 Paryatak Mitra guards in July 2025, and Hundru's guards rescued three students at Jogiya Dah in April 2026
  • A July 2025 report found no life jackets, drinking water or toilets at Dassam - carry your own water

What to pack

All three waterfalls involve walking, long stairways and getting splashed. Pack accordingly.

  • Grippy shoes (the rock-cut steps get slippery)
  • Quick-dry clothes - you will get wet at Jonha
  • 2 litres of water per person
  • Packed lunch, or cash for the stalls at Hundru and Jonha
  • Power bank - phone signal is patchy at all three
  • Small first-aid kit (band-aids especially)

When to go

Best is October to February - strong post-monsoon flow, dry steps, and Dassam splits into its ten streams most clearly as the water drops. Jharkhand Tourism gives August to March as the season for Hundru and October to January for Dassam. July to September brings the biggest flow but also closed lower steps, slippery stairs and most of the drownings. March to May is okay, but the falls are thin and the heat on the climbs is brutal.

What it costs

Our Ranchi waterfalls day tour starts at ₹2,999 for a hatchback and ₹3,399 for a sedan (4 passengers each), and ₹4,199 for an Ertiga SUV (6 passengers) - all-inclusive of fuel, tolls, parking and driver allowance, with waiting time at all three stops. That covers about 157 km of driving. Entry at the falls is extra and small: visitors in 2026 reported about ₹10 a person and ₹30 for car parking at Hundru.
