Baba Baidyanath temple in Deoghar opens at about 04:00, general jalarpan starts at about 05:00 to 05:15, and it closes in the afternoon at about 15:30 to 16:00 before reopening at 18:00 for the Shringar Puja and closing at 20:30 (20:00 from early December to Holi); the Shighra Darshanam fast-darshan coupon costs ₹300 on normal days and is sold offline only, from 08:00; and from Ranchi, 252 km away, a Raahi Saarthi cab (from ₹4,999 one way) that leaves by 04:00 reaches the temple around 10:00.
Baba Baidyanath Dham is the trip our Ranchi customers ask about most, and the one they most often plan wrong. Almost every mistake comes down to the temple's own clock - when the doors open, when they close for the afternoon, when the coupon counter opens - and to the hour you leave home. This is what our drivers actually know about the day.
Baba Baidyanath temple timings
The temple does not publish a fixed timetable, and the times move with the crowd, but the daily pattern is steady. The doors open at about 04:00; general devotees start jalarpan at about 05:00 to 05:15, once the morning puja is done. The temple closes in the afternoon at about 15:30 to 16:00 - and on crowded days it stays open until the queue clears, which in 2024-25 meant closing at 18:15, 19:15 and once at 21:00. It reopens at 18:00 for the Shringar Puja and closes for the night at 20:30, or at 20:00 in the winter schedule from Navanna in early December to Holi. The queue is shortest right at opening, in the late-morning lull around 11:00 to noon, and after the evening reopening.
| What | Normal days | Winter (early December to Holi) | Shravan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doors open | About 04:00 | About 04:00 | 03:05 in 2025 |
| General jalarpan begins | About 05:00 - 05:15, after the morning puja | About 05:00 - 05:15 | Through the argha system |
| Afternoon closing | About 15:30 - 16:00; later on crowded days | About 16:00; later on crowded days | Jalarpan runs through to about 21:00 |
| Evening reopening | 18:00, Shringar Puja | 18:00 | Shringar Puja after jalarpan ends, to about 21:30 |
| Night closing | 20:30 | 20:00 | About 22:30 in 2025 |
| Shighra Darshanam counter | Opens 08:00 | Opens 08:00 | Coupons suspended on Sundays and Mondays in 2026 |
From Prabhat Khabar's daily temple reports (December 2024 to July 2025) and Shravan 2025 and 2026 coverage; there is no official published timetable. On 1 January the temple opens at about 03:05 and the coupon counter at 06:00.
The coupon, your phone and the queue
Two of these catch first-time visitors every single time. Mobile phones are not allowed in the sanctum - the district administration decided in July 2026 to ban their use there outright - and phones and bags have to be left at a deposit point before you go in, so the simplest thing is to leave them locked in the cab with the driver and carry only what you are offering. And the Shighra Darshanam coupon - the expedited-darshan ticket - is sold offline only, at the temple administrative office. The counter opens at 08:00 on normal days (06:00 only on special days such as 1 January), and sales can pause for a few hours when the crowd is heavy. The coupon costs ₹300 per person on normal days and ₹600 on New Year, Basant Panchami and other special days. There is no verified official online booking, so any website selling you one in advance should be treated with suspicion.
- Leave phones, bags and leather in the car - budget 15 minutes if you use the deposit counter instead
- Shighra Darshanam: offline only, temple administrative office, ₹300 on a normal day, ₹600 on special days; the counter opens at 08:00, so a coupon is no help at the 04:00 opening
- During Shravani Mela 2026 the coupons were suspended on Sundays and Mondays and all VIP darshan was abolished
- Freelance pandas offering to insert you mid-queue for cash are the commonest complaint here - pay only at the official counter. In June 2025 ₹300 coupons were being resold at ₹500-700
- Off-season the queue usually clears in 45 minutes to 2 hours; nobody publishes an official figure, so treat any exact number you are quoted as a guess. In Shravan it is four to eight hours, and up to ten kilometres of queue on a Shravan Monday
From Ranchi: two roads, and why you leave at 04:00
Deoghar is 252 km from Ranchi on the short road - four-lane NH-20 to Ormanjhi, then Gola, Nawadih, Dumri, Pirtand, Giridih, Bengabad and Devipur - or about 278 km through Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Bagodar and a stretch of the GT Road, the '278 km from Ranchi' on the Deoghar district website. Either way it is five and a half to six and a half hours by car, so the departure time decides the whole day. Leave Ranchi at 04:00 and you are at the gate around 10:00, with the late-morning lull ahead of you and the afternoon closing still hours away; a 06:00 start lands you at midday against that closing, and an 08:00 start turns a day trip into an unplanned overnight. Our Ranchi to Deoghar route page (Ranchi to Deoghar) has the stops, the fares and the road in full.
- 04:00 from Ranchi - at the temple by 10:00, home by about 22:00
- 05:30 from Ranchi with an overnight - darshan at the evening reopening, when the queue is shortest of all
- From Birsa Munda Airport it is about 255 km to the temple on the short road; from Ranchi Junction about 250 km
- The short road does not pass Madhupur; going that way makes it about 267 km
Reaching the temple by train or plane
If part of your group comes by train or air, these are the last few kilometres. Jasidih Junction, on the Howrah-Delhi main line, is the practical railhead, 7 km from the temple. The district administration fixed the auto fares in August 2023 - ₹16 a seat shared and ₹130 for a reserved three-wheeler from Jasidih station to anywhere inside Deoghar town - but in 2026 you will usually be asked ₹20-50 a seat and ₹150-200 reserved, more in Shravan. Deoghar Airport's terminal is about 10 km from the temple by road; the 12 km on official pages is measured to the city centre. The airport has had a prepaid taxi counter since 28 March 2025, though its fares are not published.
| From | Road distance | Time | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jasidih Junction | 7 km | 10 - 30 min | Shared auto ₹16 official, ₹20-50 in practice; reserved ₹130 official, ₹150-200 in practice |
| Deoghar Airport (DGH) | About 10 km | 20 - 30 min | Prepaid taxi counter in the terminal; fares not published |
| Baidyanathdham station | 2 km | 10 min | Short auto or toto ride |
| Deoghar Junction | 3 km | 10 - 15 min | Short auto or toto ride |
| Basukinath temple | 42 - 45 km | About 1 hr - 1 hr 15 min | No reliable published taxi rate outside Shravan |
Distances from the Deoghar district website and road-network (OSRM) checks. Official auto fares were set by the Deoghar administration in August 2023; the 2026 market range is from a local guide site. Fares are fixed separately for Shravani Mela each year.
Baidyanath alone is half the pilgrimage
Tradition holds that the jalabhishek at Baba Baidyanath is incomplete without Basukinath, 42 to 45 km further on NH-114A. The pair is understood as a court: Baidyanath is where the plea is filed, and Basukinath - popularly the faujdari, the criminal court of Shiva - is where it is answered. This is why a same-day trip from Ranchi is a compromise rather than a shortcut: 252 km each way plus a 90 km Basukinath detour is over 600 km in a day. From Dhanbad, at 132 km, the whole thing fits comfortably into one day, which is why we sell a Dhanbad day package and a Ranchi two-day one.
- Deoghar to Basukinath: 42-45 km on NH-114A, about 45 minutes to an hour now that the 45 km four-lane opened to traffic on 24 July 2026 (The Photon News, ETV Bharat), with a separate kanwariya path
- Basukinath is far quieter than Deoghar, even in Shravan
- Dhanbad (132 km) and Bokaro (170 km) can do both temples in one day; Ranchi and Jamshedpur need two
The Trikut ropeway has been shut since 2022
This is the single most-republished piece of wrong information about Deoghar. The Trikut Parvat ropeway has not operated since 10 April 2022, when a cable-car accident killed three people and left seventy-eight stranded, some for forty-five hours. The Jharkhand tourism department blacklisted the operator in 2024, and in August 2026 said it was preparing to restart the ropeway with a new installation. The operator's own website still displays ₹65 one-way and ₹130 return with 09:00 to 16:30 timings, and travel sites copy it. Check the current status on our Trikut page (Trikut Parvat (Trikut Pahar)); the summit is still worth doing - about a two-hour climb by stairs and trail, with local guides at the base - but plan it as a trek, not a ride.
Shravani Mela: what changes, and whether to go
For one month a year Deoghar stops being a town you can drive into. Shravani Mela fills the month of Shravan - in 2026 it opened on 29 July and ended on 28 August - and the district administration puts the footfall at fifty to fifty-five lakh pilgrims in thirty days and calls it the longest religious fair in the world. Vehicles are kept well away from the temple, sparsh puja is suspended and jalarpan runs through an argha, the queue on a Shravan Monday has run to ten kilometres, VIP and out-of-turn darshan is abolished outright, and hotel rates run two to three times normal with minimum-stay rules. If your intention is specifically a Shravan jalabhishek, go on a weekday and expect a very long day. If your intention is Babadham, October to March gives the same darshan in a fraction of the time.
- Shravani Mela 2027: Shravan runs from 19 July to 17 August 2027 by the calendar Jharkhand follows, and the mela is expected to open on Guru Purnima, 18 July; the state confirms the dates nearer the time
- Shravan Mondays in 2027: 19 and 26 July, 2, 9 and 16 August
- No vehicle access near the temple; the car parks at a designated lot and the rest is on foot
- Deoghar hotels run far above normal and often set a two- or three-night minimum
What it costs, honestly
Our own fixed fares, so you have a reference point: a Ranchi-Deoghar one-way drop starts at ₹4,999, the one-day round trip package at ₹6,499 for a sedan, and the two-day Baidyanath-plus-Basukinath package at ₹8,499. From Dhanbad the one-day both-temples package is ₹4,299 and from Bokaro ₹5,299. Every one of those is all-inclusive of fuel, tolls, parking, driver allowance and 5% GST. You will find one-way quotes online at ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 - those are fare-only, and the road costs come back to you at the end of the trip. Hotels are not included anywhere: a clean mid-range Deoghar room is ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 a night outside Shravan.

Can I do Ranchi to Deoghar and back in one day?
Yes, if you leave at 04:00 and accept that Basukinath will not fit. That is roughly eleven hours in the car for four or five hours on the ground. Raahi Saarthi sells it as a fixed one-day package from ₹6,499 for a sedan. If you want both temples without rushing, the two-day package at ₹8,499 is the better trip.
What is the auto fare from Jasidih station to Deoghar?
The Deoghar administration's fixed fare from Jasidih Junction to Deoghar is ₹16 a seat in a shared auto and ₹130 for a reserved three-wheeler to anywhere in Deoghar town (set in August 2023). Does Deoghar have an airport?
Yes. Deoghar Airport (DGH) opened in July 2022 and its terminal is about 10 km by road from the Baidyanath temple, roughly 20 to 30 minutes; the 12 km on official pages is measured to the city centre. A prepaid taxi counter has run inside the terminal since March 2025. IndiGo is the only scheduled carrier. Route lists on older pages are unreliable - the airport authority's own published schedules are years out of date - so check live schedules before building a trip around a specific flight. Jasidih Junction, 7 km from the temple on the Howrah-Delhi main line, is the practical railhead.
Is Baidyanath Dham both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha?
It is named as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas by the Deoghar district administration and by the temple's own trust. Tradition also holds it to be a Shakti Peetha, the place where Sati's heart fell, worshipped as Jayadurga - that belief is widely held and often repeated, but it does not appear in the temple's or the district's own official descriptions, so it is best stated as tradition rather than as an official designation.
