Patratu Valley complete guide - the hairpin road, sunset point, distances and boating in 2026

Patratu Valley's viewpoint is about 31 km from Ranchi Junction (28 km from Albert Ekka Chowk), and Patratu Dam, with the boating point and Lake Resort, is about 7 km further down at 39-40 km - roughly 1 hr 15 min by cab on State Highway 2 through Kanke and Pithoria. The descent has about a dozen hairpin switchbacks. Boating was halted by the district on 4 May 2026, and in July 2026 only local boatmen were running limited trips, so check before you go. Raahi Saarthi runs the round trip from Rs 2,299.

If Ranchi has a must-do half-day trip, it's Patratu Valley. The road out through Kanke and Pithoria (State Highway 2) crosses the plateau, then drops off its edge in a stack of hairpin switchbacks through sal forest - and from the viewpoint at the top, the valley opens up below you with the blue sheet of Patratu Dam at its centre. The viewpoint and the dam are two different stops about 7 km apart, which is why the distance you read online swings between 28 and 40 km.

The drive itself is half the experience

The road is the Ranchi-Kanke-Pithoria-Patratu-Ramgarh road, State Highway 2 - not NH-33, and not via Ormanjhi, which turns a 39 km trip into 72 km. Pithoria Ghati, Patratu Ghati and Jalebi Ghati are all names for this one road. It leaves the plateau in two stages: a short drop with 2 hairpins just after Pithoria Chowk (18 km from Albert Ekka Chowk), then, about 11 km past Pithoria, the main stack of 9 switchbacks in about 2.2 km below the valley viewpoint, falling some 160 m towards the reservoir. That makes about a dozen hairpin switchbacks (11 by our count of the OpenStreetMap road, 9 of them stacked below the viewpoint), and more than two dozen sharp bends in all. The '27 hairpins' repeated online has no published source. From a cab, take it slow - the views are best on the late-afternoon return.

  • Heavy lorries use this road. On 16 August 2026 a speeding truck killed two people at Bucha Ghati near Pithoria - stop only at marked pull-offs, never on a bend
  • Winter fog settles on the ghat after dark, one more reason to be off it by about 18:00 in December and January
  • Birsa Zoological Park at Ormanjhi is not on this road; adding it is a detour of about 26 km

Patratu Valley and Patratu Dam are two stops, 7 km apart

The valley viewpoint sits at the top of the main hairpin stack. The reservoir, the boating point and JTDC's Patratu Lake Resort (Sarovar Vihar) are about 7 km further down the hill, and you reach them before Patratu town, which is another 7.6 km on. So 'how far is Patratu from Ranchi' has two answers, and each moves a few kilometres with where in Ranchi you start. Jharkhand Tourism lists the dam as 35 km from Ranchi, which matches the city-centre figure below.

Boating at Patratu Dam in 2026

Boating is the part of this trip you cannot count on in 2026. On 4 May 2026 the Ramgarh district administration halted all boating on the dam until every operator filed an affidavit promising life jackets for every passenger, no overloading, trained boatmen and emergency arrangements. In July 2026 the district transport office began registering and inspecting the motor boats. As of 19 July 2026, Prabhat Khabar reported that the tourism department's boat club at the Lake Resort had been locked for months, and that only the local displaced-boatmen's association (Visthapit Navik Sangh) was running limited rowing-boat and motor-boat trips. Boat fares are set per boat at the ghat and we have not seen a verified 2026 rate, so we no longer publish one - including the jet-ski and kayak prices this page used to carry.

  • Check that boats are running on the day - your driver can call ahead
  • Agree the fare for the whole boat before you get in, and wear the life jacket
  • Patratu Lake Resort entry: ₹20 per person; parking ₹20 for a bike, ₹50 for a car (Prabhat Khabar, December 2024)
  • Jharkhand Tourism lists the dam as open all year, 09:00 to 17:00
  • Migratory birds winter on the reservoir from November to March; Katua Kocha at the southern end is the favourite picnic spot, and the old Panchvahini temple stands beside the dam

Best time to visit, and sunset times

October to March is the best time: clear evenings for the sunset, migratory birds on the water from November, and the least haze over the valley. July to September is the greenest, but Ranchi averages about 16 rainy days in each of July and August, the ghat gets slippery and the view often closes in. April and May are hot - the viewpoint and the dam sit lower than Ranchi, so they run 1 to 2°C warmer, not cooler. Whatever the month, be at the viewpoint about 30 minutes before sunset.

Half-day cab itinerary from Ranchi

Patratu works as a half day or a relaxed full day. This is the winter half-day version we run most; in summer, when sunset is nearer 18:35, start about an hour and a half later.

  • 12:30 - Pickup from Ranchi, out on Kanke Road
  • 13:30 - Photo stop at the valley viewpoint on the way down (the light is flat now - you are coming back for sunset)
  • 14:00 - Patratu Dam and Lake Resort: late lunch, the lakeside, a boat if boats are running
  • 16:15 - Drive back up the hairpins to the viewpoint (7 km, 15-20 minutes)
  • 16:30 - Sunset at the viewpoint (about 17:05 in November-December, 17:20 in January)
  • 17:30 - Drive back through Pithoria before full dark
  • 18:30 - Reach Ranchi

Where to stay (if you want to extend)

JTDC has two properties beside the dam: Sarovar Vihar, which is the Patratu Lake Resort on a 21-acre site on the shore, and Paryatan Vihar Patratu, which has a swimming pool. As of September 2026 JTDC's booking system showed online booking unavailable for Sarovar Vihar, so call ahead rather than turning up. A handful of homestays and lodges in Patratu town, about 7.6 km past the dam, are the cheaper option.
