Puri is one of the four Char Dham and the seat of Lord Jagannath, and it is the one long-haul pilgrimage that Ranchi families make by road rather than by train. The temple opens at 04:30 and runs on a ritual schedule rather than continuous darshan, so the hours you arrive matter more than the day you pick. Around it sits a full seaside town - Golden Beach with its Blue Flag certification, the fishing shore at Chakratirtha, the Mahaprasad kitchens of Ananda Bazaar - and 35 km up the coast, the Konark Sun Temple.

FAQs about Puri (Shree Jagannath Dham)
How far is Puri from Ranchi by road?
Puri is 512 km from Ranchi on the short road through Chaibasa and Keonjhar, or about 580 km on the wider Jamshedpur-Balasore route via NH-16. A cab takes 11 to 12 hours either way, including breaks. The six-hour figure some distance calculators publish is not achievable on this corridor.
Are non-Hindus allowed inside the Jagannath Temple?
Entry inside Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri is restricted to Hindus, and the restriction is enforced at the Singhadwara without exception - a serving foreign ambassador was kept to the exterior in 2024. Visitors who are not admitted can take Patitapavana darshan of the deity's image from outside the Lion's Gate, and view the temple from the Raghunandan Library rooftop opposite. Konark, the beaches, Chilika and most of Bhubaneswar are open to everyone.
What are the darshan timings at the Puri Jagannath temple?
The temple opens with Dwaraphita at about 04:30 and closes after Pahuda around 23:30, but darshan is not continuous - it pauses through the day for the ritual schedule, including Mangala Alati at 05:30, Sakala Dhupa from about 09:00 and Sandhya Alati at 18:00. The practical advice is to arrive by 05:30 and treat the published niti timings as the framework rather than a queue schedule.
When is Rath Yatra in Puri, and should we travel then?
Rath Yatra fell on 16 July in 2026 and is expected on 5 July in 2027. Travelling by car in that window is difficult by design: Bada Danda and every approach road become no-vehicle zones, over a million devotees arrive, and hotel rates multiply. The bigger trap is the fortnight before it - Anasara - when the deities are moved to the Anasara Ghar and there is no public darshan at all. In 2026 that ran from 29 June to 14 July.
Can we take a Jharkhand taxi to Puri?
Yes. Raahi Saarthi runs Odisha trips on an All India Tourist Permit, which covers inter-state operation, and the cost is inside the package - nothing is paid at a check-post on NH-16. Operators quoting a bare per-kilometre rate usually exclude 'state border charges' and collect them at the end of the trip.
