Deoghar - literally 'house of the gods' - is home to Baba Baidyanath Dham, one of India's twelve sacred Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva, a complex of twenty-two temples around the central shrine. During Shravan (July-August) it hosts what the district administration calls the longest religious fair in the world: fifty to fifty-five lakh pilgrims in a single month, most of them kanwariyas who have walked the 105 km from Sultanganj on the Ganga barefoot to pour that water over the lingam. For the other eleven months it is a calm, unhurried town where the queue takes under an hour.
How to reach Deoghar (Baidyanath Dham) from Ranchi
By cab from Ranchi the short road is 252 km through Ormanjhi, Gola, Nawadih, Dumri, Pirtand, Giridih, Bengabad and Devipur - four-lane as far as Ormanjhi and two-lane for most of what follows, five and a half to six and a half hours. The Hazaribagh and Bagodar road is about 278 km - the figure on the Deoghar district website - some 25 km longer, but it picks up a stretch of the GT Road and has better places to stop. Deoghar also has its own airport (DGH), whose terminal is about 10 km from the temple by road, and Jasidih Junction on the Howrah-Delhi main line, 7 km out.

Deoghar is 252 km from Ranchi by the short road through Ormanjhi, Gola, Dumri and Giridih, which takes five and a half to six and a half hours by cab. The Hazaribagh-Bagodar alternative is about 278 km. Raahi Saarthi's fixed one-way fare is the same either way, from ₹4,999.
What is the best time to visit Baidyanath Dham?
October to March gives pleasant weather and a darshan queue that usually clears inside an hour. Shravan, roughly mid-July to late August, is the most spiritually charged month and the hardest to travel in - the queue has run to ten kilometres on a Shravan Monday, no vehicle can approach the temple, and all VIP and out-of-turn darshan is suspended.
Is Deoghar one of the 12 Jyotirlingas?
Yes. Baba Baidyanath at Deoghar is named as one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva by the Deoghar district administration and by the temple's own trust. Tradition also holds it to be a Shakti Peetha, where Sati's heart is said to have fallen - that belief is widely held but is not part of the temple's own official description.
Is the Trikut ropeway in Deoghar working?
No. The Trikut Parvat ropeway has been shut since the accident of 10 April 2022 and was still closed as of 2026, with the operator blacklisted and no reopening date announced. Ticket prices and timings still shown on the operator's own website are stale. The summit is reachable only on foot, about two hours of stairs and trail. Raahi Saarthi does not sell or promise a ropeway ride.
