The extra day buys Chilika at Satapada - 48 km down the coast, where the lagoon meets the sea and the Irrawaddy dolphins live - and it takes the pressure off every other day, so Konark gets a morning rather than a slot and Bhubaneswar's old town gets more than a drive-past. It is the version we book most often for families travelling with parents, because nothing in it is rushed.

Ranchi → Puri (512 km)
Pickup at 05:30, the NH-20 road south through Khunti, Chaibasa and Keonjhar, lunch at Keonjhargarh, then the dual carriageway through Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Reach Puri around 17:00. Evening at Swargadwar. Overnight in Puri.

Puri - darshan, Mahaprasad, Golden Beach
Singhadwara by 05:30 for darshan, Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazaar, then Gundicha Temple and Lokanath. The afternoon is free on Golden Beach - the Blue Flag stretch with lifeguards - and the evening at the fishing shore near Chakratirtha. Overnight in Puri.

Marine Drive → Konark → Puri
The 35 km Marine Drive from 08:00, with stops at Ramachandi and Beleswar. Konark Sun Temple with a proper couple of hours, the ASI museum (closed Fridays), and Chandrabhaga beach for the late afternoon. Back in Puri for the evening. Overnight in Puri.

Chilika at Satapada → Bhubaneswar
Leave at 07:00 for Satapada, 48 km down NH-316 through Brahmagiri - Alarnath Temple is on the same road if you want it. The boat at Satapada is a district-rate hire, ₹1,300 for an hour or ₹2,400 for three hours per boat, six adults and two children, running 06:00 to 18:00. The dolphins are wild and shy; the Chilika authority itself says a full sighting is rare, so treat it as a lagoon trip that may include dolphins. Afternoon drive to Bhubaneswar. Overnight in Bhubaneswar.

Bhubaneswar → Ranchi (455 km)
An early Bhubaneswar morning - Lingaraj, Mukteshwar and Rajarani, or Udayagiri-Khandagiri and Dhauli, or Nandankanan if there are children, and it must not be a Monday. On the road to Ranchi by about 11:00, lunch at Keonjhargarh, drop at your address by about 21:00.

Frequently asked questions
Will we definitely see dolphins at Chilika?
No, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something they cannot deliver. Satapada has a resident population of Irrawaddy dolphins near the sea mouth, but the Chilika Development Authority itself says the animal is shy and that seeing the whole dolphin is rare - usually you get part of a back or a tail. Book the boat for the lagoon, the sea mouth and the birds; treat a dolphin as a bonus. November to February gives the calmest water and the best chance.
How much does the Chilika boat cost and is it included?
It is not included, and it is charged per boat rather than per person: ₹1,300 for one hour of boating and dolphin viewing, or ₹2,400 for three hours including the sea mouth, at the rate the Satapada boat association states is approved by the Puri district administration. A boat takes six adults and two children, extra adults are ₹200 each up to two, and boats run 06:00 to 18:00. Raahi Saarthi keeps it as an exclusion rather than padding the package price with it.
Is five days too long for Odisha from Ranchi?
Not if you want to enjoy it. Two of the five are driving days by geography - 512 km each way - so five days is really three days on the ground, which is the minimum for Puri, Konark, Chilika and Bhubaneswar without running. Cut it to four and Chilika goes; cut it to three and Bhubaneswar goes too. What five days buys is a trip where nobody is looking at a watch.
