The full circuit: a Jyotirlinga, a Shakti Peeth, and the holiest site in Jainism, in the order that keeps the driving sane. Four days is the minimum this needs - Shikharji alone is a 27 km round of the summit shrines (9 km up, 9 km along the ridge, 9 km down) that eats a full day, and Deoghar's darshan queue is unpredictable enough that you want a buffer.

Day-by-day itinerary

Ranchi → Rajrappa → Deoghar
Pickup at 05:30. Maa Chhinnamastika Temple at Rajrappa by 07:30 for morning darshan at the Damodar-Bhairavi confluence. Continue to Deoghar via Dumri and Giridih, reaching by 14:00. Evening Baidyanath darshan. Overnight in Deoghar.

Deoghar → Basukinath → Madhuban
Morning at the Trikut Parvat base and the Tapovan caves - the Trikut ropeway has been shut since the 2022 accident, so the summit is a two-hour climb and we leave it optional. Basukinath Dham darshan around midday, then drive to Madhuban at the base of Parasnath Hill, reaching by 18:00. Early night - the vandana starts at 03:00-04:00.

Sammet Shikharji trek
Start at about 03:30. The full vandana is 27 km - 9 km up to the first tonk, 9 km along the summit ridge, 9 km back down - and takes 8 to 12 hours: most pilgrims reach the first tonk around 08:00-09:00 and are back in Madhuban between 14:00 and 17:00. (Seeing sunrise from the top would mean leaving around midnight.) Doli service is available for those who need it. Rest at Madhuban in the evening. Overnight at Madhuban.

Madhuban → Ranchi
Morning at the Bhomiyaji Temple and the Madhuban temple complex, then the return to Ranchi on the short road via Dumri, Nawadih and Gola - about 160 km, 4 to 4.5 hours - with an optional detour to Topchanchi Lake. Drop by 19:00.

Is the Shikharji trek manageable for older pilgrims?

The full Shikharji vandana is 27 km - 9 km up, 9 km along the ridge of tonks, 9 km down - and takes most walkers 8 to 12 hours, so it is demanding. Doli (palanquin) service runs the full route from Madhuban and is what most elderly pilgrims use: on the June 2025 published rate card a two-bearer doli cost ₹2,300 for a pilgrim up to 49 kg and ₹2,760 for 50-69 kg, and a four-bearer chair doli ₹4,600-9,200 by weight. Book the doli the evening before, and a day in advance in peak season between November and February. The cab waits at Madhuban for the whole day at no extra charge.
